Then I just got onto reading and enjoying the book. It took very surprising turns. Now what is weird is that I really liked Grace. Wouldn’t want her as my BFF but … Reading about her thoughts and actions, we feel we understand this eccentric character. I was fascinated by Grace, her unusual life, her essential work, and her empathy for the deceased. Then the story takes a sudden turn, and we learn that Grace has shown herself as an unreliable narrator, not only to the readers but to herself. Her motivations reveal a moral complexity. She finds small clues during cleaning that she believes link a couple of the elderly men who recently died alone. The police do not find her to be credible.

I don’t want to give away too much as there are fantastic twists in this novel that literally took my breath away! I just didn’t see them coming, but they brilliantly enhance the tension throughout the story. All the way through I couldn’t work out where this novel was going to go and I loved that! I really don’t want to spoil any of the twists for you. Original and immersive, this is a book that messes with your head and confounds your expectations. The Undiscovered Deaths of Grace McGill is the story of what happens when Grace McGill thinks she has found a similarity between the most recent houses of the dead that she has cleaned.

Some people die alone, and someone has to clean what’s left behind – houses, bodies, memories, and old, dark secrets.

I have read many books over the past few years with characters named in the title, Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine, The surprising days of Isla Pembroke, The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle to name a few....Not particularly keen on interacting with anyone, Grace takes pride in her work disinfecting and decontaminating homes where people died and lay until discovery. She respected the lives of those she cleaned up after and is saddened by the fact that they died alone. At times reflective and others mournful, her complexity is rooted in a sincerity to help lonely people. Grace can’t get the mysterious life and sad death of Tommy Agnew out of her head, and she soon begins an investigation that could cost her her life. The past has stayed buried for many years already, but Grace has never been one to brush things under the carpet . . . I start, as always, with an appraisal of the property, doing an initial walk through and hazard assessment of the scene. Moving quietly through the flat, I head for the bedroom. Mr Agnew’s final resting place. His deathbed. It’s where the dangers are; potential biological hazards like bloodborne pathogens, human body fluids and tissue. They could be hiding in grout, cement, wood flooring, sub flooring, you name it. The entire room has the potential to emanate death odours, so my first task is to use cross-contamination protocol to control it by securing and separating it from the rest of the flat. I seal it off, then set about making it safe. The Undiscovered Deaths of Grace McGill was released in the UK on 20 January 2022, so it available now for you all to read. If you love quirky, twisted thrillers, I suggest you grab your copy now! To give it its Sunday name, I carry out bioremediation. I do the deep clean that’s needed after a body has lain decomposing for so long. It’s smelly, it’s sad, it’s messy, and it’s dangerous

There is so much I could say a bout this book but I don't want to journey into spoiler territory. The lion's share of the book centres around Grace's infatuation with a photograph that she discovers during a clean up, her bid to discover it's origins, it's meaning and to identify the other people in the picture. Although this may seem a very strange obsession - most of us can likely imagine a passing interest in a person's story but perhaps not the level of scrutiny Grace engages in - but the more I learned of Grace, the more natural and understandable her actions became. And as the story progresses, the tension and the mystery really start to develop, Grace uncovering loose threads that threaten to see her whole existence unravel when pulled upon. With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Hodder and Stoughton for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review. The title fits the book well, but it didn’t do anything to make me want to read it. Nor does the cover. Don’t let this put you off! As Grace follows the trail of the age old mystery she discovers that there are those who want the past to stay in the past and she's in danger.
