Description

Laura is furious that she and the other young mothers are forced to give up their children for adoption and becomes angry every time it's mentioned. The authors writing perfectly encapsulated the innocence and young nature of the main character, Laura, expertly writing her character and capturing the confusion, whirlwind and uncertainty that was being a young, unmarried, pregnant girl in these times. Laura's mother decides to travel with her to Heathcote House despite how angry she is with her because she realises just how young and frightened Laura is in that moment. She makes bonds that get her through what will be the hardest time of her short life, but ultimately make her strong, resilient and determined to fight for what she feels is right.

I find JW’s writing so easy to fall into, I am always immersed in the world and the characters, I definitely felt all the emotions. She can immediately transport you back to being a teenager and discovering the adult world for the first time.

the topic of consent and adoption was tackled wonderfully can we expect anything less and was a gripping story for older readers. She also keeps Laura's secret about being pregnant and later visits her and Heathcote House when no-one else ever has. G-Rated Sex: Nothing really seems to happen between Laura and Leon; she mentions him pulling down her clothes and touching her but she pushes him away before he can seemingly do anything. Poor Laura ends up being coerced into having sex when she has no idea what's actually going on and her parents are furious on finding out that she's pregnant and send her away to Heathcote House. The tiny illustrations that accompany the beginning of chapters remind readers the tale follows a young girl, as Laura’s advanced literacy enables readers to forget her youth.

She has written over 100 books and is the creator of characters such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather. Laura is incredibly flattered by Nina’s attention, but aware she lives in what’s known as the “Shanty Town”, while Nina has everything she could possibly wish for, and kissing experience to boot. I've been a Jacqueline Wilson fan since my teens and once again, she doesn't hold back in exploring difficult topics and bringing you on an emotional journey. Laura herself does grow as a character when she thinks about the expectation placed on her vs Leon, but that is briefly stated and then never mentioned again really.I felt that the book ended very abruptly which was a shame because it built so well and we got to know the characters really deeply then it just suddenly ended.

Sheltered by her overprotective parents and eager to fit in with new best friend Nina and appear more grown up, you can see how things spiral out of control. Sent away to save her family from shame, Laura meets girls just like her, whose families have given up on them - and they become a family for each other at the most difficult time in all their lives.I read this book in a couple of hours and i did nearly cry but only at a really tragic bit about literal rape so dont read this book if thats a touchy subject. Leon ends up having sex with Laura, it’s a blurred line of consent as we realise Laura doesn’t actually know what is happening and is therefore never able to say yes or no. Marilyn starts out being quite stern and under Miss Andrews thumb, but she does grow to like Laura and the other girls in her care, and eventually tearfully agrees that Laura should be allowed to keep her baby. Given Wilson’s immense talent to amuse, she deserves great credit for undertaking this much more sombre task.

Wilson did an excellent job of framing Laura to the reader, so when the encounter with Leon happens, you truly believe she had no idea of what had just occurred. I knew it would be well written and sensitively tackled as Jacqueline Wilson so often does and I knew it would be handled well. The story gripped me and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey Laura went through without having to think too hard.Although there may be some denial as Laura does understand the signs of being pregnant before she's officially diagnosed. Broken Pedestal: A mild example but Laura gets over her blind worship of Nina's family when she sees that they're just ordinary people, helped in part when Dr Bertram (male) reacts coldly towards her on finding out she's pregnant. I found her writing to be just as engaging and well-paced as I did when I was a teenager, which surprised me. Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Leon and Daniel are described as being this way, Laura seems to have a type.
