Tolhurst is aware that the title may raise eyebrows. “I know there are loads of fans who are going to say: ‘What? No, the Cure were never goth!’ In fact, the original title for the book wasn’t Goth. I wanted to call it The Lesser Saints, but the publishers said: ‘What’s that about?’ I tried ‘Post-Punk’ on my editor but he said that was too broad.”

It's difficult to give this a star rating because I really enjoyed it, yet I recognize that it's not a terribly well-written work overall. It does have its moments in that regard. I found that it really moved in the middle. Maybe the emotional aspects of the time period he was discussing in the middle (the band's early heyday from about 1981-1987) were a little easier to convey than some of the more complicated material concerning his home life. Early on the attempt to convey dialogue felt stilted at best. Later there was a lot of repetition and cliche. If I weren't as connected to the material, I'd probably give this 3 stars. I believe Dr. Jeff Rediger is the perfect person to write this meaningful and timely book, which shows us a new paradigm of healing from physical illness. His unique documentation of the traits and strategies of individuals who have manifested their own medical recoveries, against all odds, will offer not only hope but also genuine insight to anyone facing a medical crisis.” In Cured, Dr. Rediger digs down to the root causes of illness, showing how to create an environment that sets the stage for healing. He reveals the patterns behind healing and lays out the physical and mental principles associated with recovery: first, we need to physically heal our diet and our immune systems. Next, we need to mentally heal our stress response and our identities. He is currently in the middle of research to find out whether there’s any way of discovering, via a blood test, when people are heading into this dangerous territory and their fat cells are putting out what he describes as “distress signals”.An amazing piece of work ... Timely and beautifully written' Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score The book feels incredibly personal - not because it is the story of one man, but because it's the story of one man's perspective. Lol clearly knows what his readers want to hear. The focus of the book is largely dedicated to The Cure, what went well and what went wrong. That is what his readers are interested in, and his almost twenty five years away from the band get a mere mention. Lol will not become best friend to the reader. But the reader will understand him better.

those with remarkable recoveries are the heroes in self-care, who have achieved something unusual because they see ability and opportunity where others see disability and disease. One of Taylor’s most important new discoveries is that everyone has their own fat threshold: an individual level of tolerance for levels of fat in the body. “It’s a personal thing. It’s nothing to do with the sort of information that’s often provided about obesity, which is about average BMI and what the population is doing. The bottom line is, a person will develop type 2 diabetes when they’ve become too heavy for their own body. It doesn’t matter if their BMI is within the ‘normal’ range. They’ve crossed their personal threshold and become unhealthy.”A very honest, raw & heartfelt reflection on the formation of one of the greatest bands in the world, The Cure, and the trials of one of the founding members. This book EXCEEDED my expectations and I’m so glad I didn’t brush it off on the first glance as just another self help book.

There was no single vector and each case was distinct and unique. As in life, we are all on individual journeys. The aim, though, is not to define categories, but to showcase and explain a sensibility that is fascinated with the bleaker side of life. While more outre corners of goth culture focused on vampires, ruined abbeys and somewhat alarming sadomasochistic practices, Tolhurst is primarily interested in a kind of ethereal pessimism: the mournful yearning and heightened emotional drama expressed in songs such as Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights, Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart and I Know It’s Over by the Smiths. Look for the outliers. Look for the scattered dots at the far edges of the chart. Don’t let the law of averages bury them. They are there, and there are more of them than we think. However, when you get to a certain age you do finally accept that death is inevitable and quite apart from wanting to ensure that it doesn't arrive earlier than planned, one of the things that I have learned as I recover from surgery is that I don't want to go gentle into that dark night. Hobbling around, in pain and permanently exhausted is something I would like to avoid if at all possible.
