Readers will love it as it is full of daring and bravery, and much backfiring of ridiculous schemes and much crossing out. Our Words for Life site is packed with ideas for fun, family activities that support children's reading, writing and speaking at home.

The only downside of this book is that it ends so abruptly and we are left desperate to find out what happens next, there are so many unanswered questions- will Dave and Skipper live happily ever after with tummies full of biscuits (the jammy ones)? Fortunately Dave is rescued by a nice human lady (also the owner of Mean Cat) and taken back to her palatial shed to recover. Author Guy Bass introduces SCRAP, about one robot who tried to protect the humans on his planet against an army of robots.

Our Young Readers team has 25 years of experience delivering fun reading events to help pupils develop their own reader identity and engage with reading for pleasure.

The National Literacy Trust was commissioned by World Book Day to evaluate the impact of the initiative on the reading lives of children aged 8 to 11 in the UK. The series is based on two pigeons who find themselves battling predators in an array of madcap scenarios, all the while proving that friendship and teamwork can defeat anything. You can also read on to learn more about how we celebrated in 2023, and to access reading for pleasure resources, ideas and activities that can encourage a love of reading throughout the whole year. The occasional breaks in the story as Dave and Skipper converse back and forth in speech bubbles is cleverly done and the evolution of their plan to expel Mean Cat resulting in lots of revisions and crossings out is another clever additional to the book. Be careful, though - there's a danger of actual tears and serious stomach-hurt from doubling-over with laughter.

Another hilarious combination of engaging plot, silly jokes and wonderful illustrations from the Dave Pigeon team, which means that this sequel is just as good as the original. Great for World Book Day, but also full of inspiration to support reading for pleasure throughout the year. With our partners, World Book Day, The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education, and The Open University we ran a webinar for teachers on how to engage parents with reading for pleasure behaviours. Read on to discover new, free resources to help bring the excitement of World Book Day and the pleasure of reading to your classroom. We want to make sure no child is left out of World Book Day, and understand that that families may be under significant financial and time pressures.
