Mummification was a complex and expensive procedure, in part because it required so many products. Although Egyptologists have not been able to identify all of these with complete certainty, here are the top eight essential ingredients to making the perfect mummy. As you probably guessed, the purpose of stuffing and covering the body with natron was to remove all bodily fluids from the body and desiccate it. Once the body was completely desiccated, it was rubbed with perfumed oils and then wrapped very carefully with linen bandages. Once completely wrapped, the remains were placed inside of a sarcophagus and then inside of a tomb. In the case of the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, their tombs are now known as the Great Pyramids of Giza. Andy is a decently relatable protagonist who is likable as Jason is indeed a braggy jerk. He's got a step mother and thankfully she's nice and he's even nice to her, he likes her so we get to "you're not my real mom" stuff. Oh and he's got a little sister he bonds with, that was refreshing. The family stuff is important, as Andy's birth mom died when he was young and Jason's birth dad basically left for California.

In popular fiction mummies were reduced to little more than bandaged corpses with arms outstretched as they staggered towards some hapless victim. In Bram Stoker's 'Jewel of the Seven Stars', his reanimated Egyptian princess established an enduring image of the villainous mummy endlessly repeated by Hollywood, from Boris Karloff's 1932 film 'The Mummy' ('It comes to Life!') to the current big-budget re-makes of recent years..

Certainly in Egypt mummification was very much a growth industry, with levels of service depending on cost. In the deluxe version, the brain was generally extracted down the nose and the entrails removed before the hollow body was dried out with salts. The dried skin was then treated with complex blends of oils and resins whose precise nature is now being studied using the latest analytical techniques. There is also a great fantasy element to the book, with Andy channeling the spirit of the mummy. This part is a bit spooky and mysterious and adds a fun tension to the book. I love the imagination the author uses here and how it is used to ultimately resolve the story.
