If you look at other vendors, you can get more ports, faster ports, more PoE, less PoE, or more licensing fees. You won’t find the unique combination of features UniFi and Professional 8 PoE offer though. Like the case of the U6 Enterprise, without an internal fan, the Ubiquiti Switch Enterprise 8 PoE ran quite warm in my testing. It wasn’t hot enough to cause concern but warmer than other switches. So, it’s best to place it somewhere airy or cool.

I don’t know if it’s a good idea to start phasing out some of those 1st generation models, but something has to give. If all 4 of these models move to general access, they’re going to have over 30 different models of UniFi switches. That reminds me of Apple in the 1990’s, and not in a good way. Having so many models with overlapping features is overwhelming, and Ubiquiti doesn’t make comparing them easy. In my opinion, a reduction in SKUs would help the lineup make more sense. My First Thoughts On These New Models I've had an Enterprise 8 PoE for a while, and it does get warm in normal use. The fan whirs up when the switch is booting up, but is mostly silent during normal operation. I would expect the Pro 8 PoE to be similar, even with minor differences in port speed and the addition of some metal to the enclosure. Lite 8 PoE and Lite 16 PoE Additionally, its (2) sine-wave, AC outputs can power 110V, AC devices, including a modem and gateway. The USW Mission Critical also features a 1.3" LCM color touchscreen that concisely displays key system and connection insights. This switch can be monitored or configured from anywhere with the powerful, intuitive UniFi Network web application and mobile app. The Switch Enterprise 48 PoE (USW Enterprise 48 PoE) is a fully managed switch with (48) 2.5GbE, 802.3at PoE+ RJ45 ports, (4) 10G SFP+ ports, and a 720W total PoE supply. Along with its Layer 3 functionality, this switch offers an extensive suite of Layer 2 switching protocols, including port-specific operation modes (switching, mirroring, or aggregate). The USW Enterprise 48 PoE also features a 1.3" LCM color touchscreen that concisely displays key system and connection insights. In the end, I had to use two TP-Link TL-SM5310-T adapters for the testing, and it was impossible to know if they caused them to perform slower than a true 10Gbps connection, as shown on the charts. Considering the uplink role, though, the SFP+ ports’ sustained rate, in my case, was still more than fast enough.WARNING: When both PoE In and DC Input are connected, the highest voltage power of the two will immediately pass through to PoE Out (if enabled).

For comparison, the Zyxel XS1930-12HP features two SFP+ ports, but its ten PoE++ ports are all 10Gbps Mulit-Gig. The table below will highlight the differences between the two. Ubiquiti Switch Enterprise 8 PoE vs Zyxel XS1930-12: Hardware specifications The Ubiquiti Switch Enterprise 8 PoE’s two SFP+ ports can be turned into Multi-Gig ports via adapters — necessary when your existing network doesn’t have an SFP+ port. Shown in the pic are two TP-Link TL-SM5310-T (not included) used for the testing. TP-Link Omada is essentially a budget copy of UniFi. TP-Link has done its best to replicate the UniFi ecosystem, down to some similar designs and feature limitations. Omada is generally cheaper and more flexible but has fewer options, less polish, and a lower market share. Out of the box, the Ubiquiti Switch Enterprise 8 PoE looks great with a touchscreen and a solid build. The switch is heavy and feels sturdy. And it comes with everything to get it up and running, including mounting accessories and a standard power cable. When working with an UniFi controller, the Ubiquiti Switch Enterprise 8 PoE has useful port and bandwidth managing features applicable to savvy or business users. If your budget is a bit higher and your needs align with Meraki’s offering, there is no desktop-sized switch with layer 3 support. If you can give up on layer 3, the MS120-8FP and MS130-8P and their various submodels are the closest alternatives. The MS130-12X is closer to the Enterprise 8 PoE, offering 2.5 Gbps RJ45 and 10 Gbps SFP+ with PoE support. Cisco Small Business

WARNING: Before enabling PoE passthrough in the UniFi Network Application, ensure that the connected PoE device supports the PoE power (48V). After that, if you want to view the switch’s status or change some simple settings, you can use its little touchscreen, which is fun and helpful. There are a lot of Instant On switch options, but no high-end desktop model quite like the Pro 8 PoE. See my other posts on Aruba Instant On for more details. MikroTikFor data communication, an SFP+ port has speed grades of either 1Gbps or 10Gbps. The older version, SFP, can only do 1Gbps, though it shares the same port type as SFP+. This type of port standard is more strict in compatibility and more reliable in performance. The Switch Enterprise XG 24 (USW Enterprise XG 24) is a fully managed, mult-gigabit, Layer 3 switch with (24) 10GbE RJ45 ports and (2) 25G SFP28 ports. The USW Enterprise XG 24 also features a 1.3" LCM color touchscreen that concisely displays key system and connection insights. Overall, the Enterprise 8 PoE proved to be a fast 2.5Gbps Mulit-Gig switch. Its performance was on par, if not better, than others of similar specs I’ve tried. Runs hot and requires long boot times The switch’s small touchscreen allows access to the switch’s various settings accessible via vertical or horizontal scrolling/swiping. Simple plug-n-play setup, helpful touchscreen
