Description

On the other hand, Cato is just a teenager, who previously grew up as a slave in the Imperial Palace. At the start of the series, he joins as Macro’s Optio in the Eagles. The first book of the series is set in 42 A.D. Throughout the series, author Simon Scarrow has shared the experiences of Macro and Cato. When Emperor Nero's infatuation with his mistress is exploited by political enemies, he reluctantly banishes her into exile. Cato, isolated and unwelcome in Rome, is forced to escort her to Sardinia. Overall, I enjoyed this novel and am looking forward to reading the next installment in the series.

In the first book of the series,” Under the Eagle,” Cato and Macro are ranked as Optio and Centurion respectively in the Roman army. Emperor Claudius is on a conquest to capture Britain and has sent his forces to war. Some of the senior officers sent to this mission include Vitellius and Vespasian. At the battle front, Macro and Cato start witnessing strange happenings in their camp such as secret missions, betrayals and ambushes. Vitellius, a senior officer who has bad blood with Macro is the cause of all these strange happenings in the camp as he is not at the battle front to fight for Rome, but for his own selfish interests. Vitellius is planning to steal Caesar’s pay chest, that contains a good size of valuable gold. Macro and Cato’s army skills and survival tactics are put to test as they try to survive at the battle front and win not only the battle for Britain but also internal battles in their own camp. What is to follow is a Roman adventure with plenty of action, no doubt about that, but its also a book with a similar theme as in "Invictus", in what the local tribal revolt is concerned, but now adding to it is a deadly pestilence and with only Cato in the headlines an a supporting role for Apollonius, so that overall this engaging book is somewhat inferior to its predecessors in intensity, interaction, warfare and (real) historical battles against fearsome opponents like the Parthians, or the tribes from Germania, or the Celts from Britannia, and I can only hope that the author will return to that kind of formula again. He gains tremendous inspiration for writing his novels while walking with his dogs around the ruins of the Roman town situated on the outskirts of Norwich. Apart from writing novels, Simon also keeps himself busy in developing projects for film and television along with his brother Alex.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The most torturous part? The fact I know I have almost ten more books in this series before it'll be complete (or at least up to date) without even including the various tangential off-shoots. It’s AD60 and Prasutagus has died leaving Boudica as Queen of the Iceni in Britannia. Rome has long wanted to quell rebellious Britannia and put an end to the different tribes - including the Iceni. Corto y entretenido. Como siempre digo de esta saga, es bueno cuando el autor nos saca de los lugares comunes en este tipo de obras, dando un nuevo aire a los personajes y a nosotros. Alex Scarrow Interview". authortrek.com. Archived from the original on 10 November 2011 . Retrieved 2 January 2017. Storytelling is absolutely excellent, all figures, whether real historical or fantastic fictional, come vividly to life in this story of war and death, and especially our main protagonists Cato & Macro are very lifelike, believable and humane in their dealings in life and war with their fellow Romans as well as with the native tribes, while the increasing hostile atmosphere and hatred come very much to the forefront.

Vitellius is of course the villain of the piece. Just as he did in the first book of the series, he betrays his country and his comrades.

Sometimes fate is destiny though as, not long after suffering a beating for not paying up, the former soldier gets his wish and Cato comes looking for refuge to this part of the empire.

On arrival in Sardinia, Cato is faced with undertrained and badly equipped troops as well as a deadly plague that is sweeping the island. Despite these Cato is able to comp!eye his mission although this was very close run and came at personal cost to him. Tenenkrommende politiek en intrige met een heftige ontknoping aan het eind van het boek. Ook de gevechten zijn levendig omschreven. What strikes me most about this book, and to a certain extent the previous book in the series too, is just how different it is to the author's non-Roman period fiction. To tell what any of those surprises are would spoil the fun when you read the book, so I'll let someone else pull off a spoiler and tell what they are. I will say this much, the title doesn't refer to the emperor, who happens to be Nero, going into exile. If you read the flyleaf on the book, it will tell you and that will spoil one of the surprises, but it's up to you if you want to be surprised or not as you read the book. n.b. these novellas were available as e-books prior to publication of the full title. His passion for writing began at an early age. He spent most of his childhood traveling the world. Having landed on the barbaric island of Britain in the previous book, the Roman army now attempts to conquer it. Our hero, Cato and his centurion Macro are two men amongst the thousands of troops in four Roman legions assigned the task. There is also an interesting parallel .story of a Roman column invading Mona (Anglesea) with the intention of destroying the last of the remaining Druids.

Let's talk about Under The Eagle by Simon Scarrow. It's good, in a sort of balls-to-the-wall way. Having read this before, I knew what to expect. Blood, betrayal, lots of swearing and gladius slashing fun. With any historical novel, there's a fine line between historical accuracy and story-telling. Conn Iggulden, as much as I respect him for taking on Caesar is a fine example of bad story-telling set against historical accuracy (which in part is well researched). Simon Scarrow doesn't pretend to be 'historical accurate', yes it is accurate in the sense of being set within the reign of Claudius-I've-The-Mind-Of-A-Child-And-The-Eating-Habit-Of-A-Ox. Yes it is accurate given the timeline, the invasion of Britain was what solidified Claudius's Emperor-ship - without it, he would have been history (ironic). Boudicca: a young British noblewoman, who Macro becomes smitten with in the third novel, When the Eagle Hunts. In addition to all this, there is a plot to assassinate Claudius. The tribune Vetellius, a traitor in the previous book, is working with the Britons and intends to help them kill his emperor in an elaborate scheme to further his own career. Cato inadvertently uncovers this plot. Can he foil it and save Claudius, or will the treacherous scheme succeed?
