Foam has a tendency to swell and distort with removers too, so often it helps to tear off large unattached sections especially if they flop about and get in the way. Skin usually secrets natural oils to protect it, so cleaning the skin with a toner or mild astringent will help the glues do their job. Silicone adhesives may be a better option in this case, and even using a primer like Top Guard for more severe case.

You won’t need your entire kit on set, but there are still a set of comprehensive tools and products you may want located in your kit, ready for all and any applications.

If the piece is made larger so it has a larger surface area to attach to the face then that may help. Ideally though, Third Degree isn’t a good choice for an extensive thing like this – a premade appliance made with softer silicone would be best. An A&B skin (as opposed to cap plastic) would make an appliance much more durable and withstand multiple applications. After the bulk of the piece is off, hot face cloths work wonders to loosen remaining glue and feels fantastic after a day under makeup. Hot water can be used to soak the face cloth first, and then be twisted to dry. There are two types of appliances that have come into widespread use over the last few years. Firstly, the GFA or ESA, (which stands for Gel-filled Appliance or Encapsulated Silicone Appliance), and secondly the Pros-Aide Transfer, (sometimes referred to as Tinsley Transfers after one of the early developers of the technique). The developers of these techniques were seeking what was once thought impossible: appliances that would be both practically invisible on close examination, to stand up to the high quality cameras of today, whilst also being robust enough to stand up to the rigours of water, mud, blood, sweat and action filming. The transfers are made of, well, GLUE! And they are very robust, tenacious, and don’t come off till you want them to. I’ve had them covered in the kind of stuff that normally eats prosthetics for breakfast and they hung in there.

THE MOULD: Both use silicone moulds. Obviously we need to use a platinum silicone for the GFAs as we will be using a platinum silicone to make the pieces (PlatSil Gel-10 with Smith’s Deadener. For transfers you can use a tin silicone mould.By using Prosaide Cream without extra effort to remove water content, you risk potential issues in drying and more shrinkage than is desirable. First, make sure you have covered costume or clothing with towels, cape or paper roll of some type. This is usually then end of a long day, so removal is happening when you may be at your most tired and ready to get to bed. Make sure the sloppiness and spills are protected against before you start. Isopropyl Alcohol used for cleaning your prosthetic appliance before use and to activate paint palettes. Also used for dissolving edges when encapsulated with Super Baldiez With cap plastic encapsulated appliances, it is not uncommon to find that the cap plastic peels away from the silicone. Glycerol is used for its hygroscopic properties as a humectant, and also added to products for smoothness and texture.. It is found in Liquid Prosaide from 5-15%, and in the Cream from 2-10%.

Occasionally bubbles will appear even at lower drying temperatures, and even when no direct airflow is on the surface of the piece. In these cases it seems most likely that the mixture contained too much remaining water and would be better off dried very slowly at room temperature. This removes much of the water content, which in Prosaide is at 45-50%, producing a moulding glue with a significantly higher solids content. By reducing the water, we can get more solids into our moulds, which minimizes shrinkage in the final piece. Reducing water content also reduces final drying time.

Prepping for Application

And finally… BLOODS - scab paste and wound filler as mentioned, liquid bloods that are non-drying, liquid bloods that dry, edible/mouth-safe liquid bloods, blood capsules, blood powder, blood for eyes, non-beading bloods, silicone flow blood, all of the above in the different colour stages (venial, arterial, aged) the list goes on, and on and on…. And on. Medical adhesives, like the Kryolan Extra Strength Medical Adhesive shown here, are also perfect for sensitive skin. You can also use PVP/VA Copolymer (70% Polyvinylpyrrolidone & 30%Vinyl Alcohol). You can find it at just about any place that sells supplies to make home made lotions, makeup, hairspray, among other things.”
