It is almost impossible to talk about Manhattan without descending into arguments about Allen’s morality. But let’s focus for now on Keaton’s performance, as the enjoyably absurd Mary. Only Allen’s greatest collaborators can take his lines and put their personality on them, instead of reciting them in an Allen-esque rhythm, and Keaton does this better than anyone. The scene of Mary and Isaac’s first date – Keaton and Allen clearly enjoying being with one another while New York looks impossibly beautiful around them – is one of the great movie date scenes. Allen and Keaton’s friendship is the warm heart of this movie. 2. Reds (1981)

Her 1999 book, Local News, is a selection of photographs she extracted from the files of the long-defunct Los Angeles Herald Express, a Hearst tabloid. To this she appends a light, lovely account of growing up with her family in the Los Angeles of the Fifties and Sixties. It’s a tribute to the city which she’s now come to accept as her hometown, and also a tribute to her family, in which she is deeply embedded as mother, daughter, and sister. But she’s hobbled by her own persona: indelible and, to many – including directors such as Nancy Meyers – irresistible. The man who first flagged her charms was, of course, Woody Allen, who cast her in the 1971 Broadway run of Play it Again, Sam. They fell in love, split amicably and along the way made eight movies, their last that lovely free-wheeling reunion, 1992’s Manhattan Murder Mystery, which saw Keaton taking on a role written for Mia Farrow – who still wanted to play it, despite accusing Allen of child molestation a few days before. When asked what made Keaton funny, Allen said: "My opinion is that with the exception of Judy Holliday, she's the finest screen comedienne we've ever seen. It's in her intonation; you can't quantify it easily. When Groucho Marx or W.C. Fields or Holliday would say something, it's in the ring of their voices, and she has that. It's never line comedy with her. It's all character comedy." [133] Charles Shyer, who directed her in Baby Boom, said Keaton was "in the mold of the iconic comedic actresses Carole Lombard, Irene Dunne and Rosalind Russell." [141] In 2017 Keaton was chosen by the board of directors of the American Film Institute to receive the AFI Life Achievement Award, which Woody Allen presented. [142] Filmography [ edit ] Film [ edit ] YearFor decades, Keaton’s musical talents were only seen in movies she’s starred in films like Annie Halland And So It Goes. Her duet with Ashe marks Keaton’s first major release as a recording artist outside of Broadway cast musicals.

" A Businessman’s View of Mid-American Life" (Review), The New York Times (May 23, 2008) It’s always better when you don’t see me,” she says, “or see them, because it becomes so strange, you know? I guess I mean: it’s not that bad or anything, but it’s a little odd.” We both talk, stop, talk over each other again, a car crash of chatter. Yes, phone is so much better, I say, and if there’s any nicer sound than Diane Keaton laughing at your joke, I’d like to hear it. Ashe called it “crazy” that she gave an opportunity to a Hollywood icon. “I just feel really honored that it's that song and that she sounds so perfect on it,” Ashe tells Elite Daily over Zoom, while sitting next to a framed photo of the pair that’s perched on her piano. “It had to have been this song, and I think it's really honoring to her, her voice, and her story.”
