He gained international recognition through his subway drawings and street graffiti in particular and produced more than 50 public artworks in dozens of cities around the world. From his first chalk drawings in the New York City subway stations, to his renowned “Radiant Baby” symbol, and his commissions for Swatch Watch and Absolut Vodka, Haring’s work was both emblematic of the manic work ethic of 1980s New York, yet distinctive for its social awareness. Keith Negley's bold, energetic illustrations evoke Keith Haring while maintaining a style all their own. Haring encourages each little artist to make the book their very own, inviting them to bring their unique touch to every page. This title features lithographic images of the artist's felt-tip drawings on paper, evidently expanded from a series of nine works Haring had made in March of the same year for the Public Illumination Magazine's "Civilization Issue" under the pseudonym "Kip Herring".

Keith Haring (1958 – 1990) was an American artist, and one of the leading figures of the graffiti art movement which emerged from New York in the 1980s. Tracing the arc from his early subway "tags" to his poignant work on social issues as diverse as AIDS illiteracy and apartheid this visually stunning book is the definitive work on Keith Haring.

She adds that a new biography by Brad Gooch is due to be published next year, which will leave “no stone unturned”. When Keith moved to New York City in 1978, he rode the subway and noticed that the crowds were bored and brusque, and the subways were decayed and dreary.

We hear how graffiti artists and DJs became inspirations to him; we meet Madonna, the B52s, Arthur Russell, Grace Jones and Jean-Michel Basquiat; and then themid-80s AIDS epidemic changes everything. Haring was able to reach a wide audience through his humorous, accessible imagery and saturated colours.

Forty years after he came to prominence, Haring’s art continues to garner worldwide recognition, breaking down barriers and spreading joy, while taking on complex issues that remain crucial today, from environmentalism, capitalism, and the proliferation of new technologies to religion, sexuality, and race. I would love to be a teacher because I love children and I think that not enough people respect children or understand how important they are. From his boyhood days spent drawing compulsively through his tragic death, the trajectory of Keith Haring’s life is a story of incredible achievement, luck, opportunity, and extraordinary commitment. He proved the legitimacy of street art by bringing it to museums and galleries, blurring the boundary between high and low culture- an endeavour also shared by his contemporaries Warhol and Basquiat. It covers significant ground, discussing his childhood, coming out, and many of his most important artistic influences. The mission of the Keith Haring Foundation is to sustain, expand, and protect the legacy of Keith Haring (1958–1990), his art, and his ideals. He previously published a graphic novel on Jean-Michel Basquiat, which was translated into many languages. Thoughtfully written by Matthew Burgess, the much-acclaimed author of Enormous Smallness, and marking the debut picture book of illustrator Josh Cochran- himself a specialist in bright, dense, conceptual drawings- this book is truly a joyful veneration of the transformative power of art.

Written by Haring’s sister, this is a great biography on Haring for young audiences that humanises the experience of a world-renowned artist by telling his inspirational story from childhood onwards.

Keith Haring was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1958 and arrived in New York from Pittsburgh in 1978, befriending artists including Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. It shows readers what it was like to be part of New York City’s vibrant downtown art scene in the 1980s—the nightclubs, art openings, the rise of hip-hop—and how world events, such as the fall of the Berlin Wall; the escalation of the nuclear arms race; apartheid; and the dawn of the climate crisis played into his work.
