Demoted to Extra: Alfred Pennyworth and James Gordon only receive a few mentions, compared to the central members of the supporting cast they are elsewhere. Mattson Tomlin: Blair Wong is an original character, and I wanted to introduce her as someone who could be Batman. I think that the further you get into the story, you realize how complimentary Bruce Wayne and Blair Wong really are to each other. They are both going to end up going head to head, and who is really going to be the world's greatest detective here? Bruce Wayne’s mission as the Batman has only been under way for a year or so, but he can tell he’s making a difference. Unfortunately, he’s made some powerful enemies. All the traditional power brokers of Gotham resent the disruption the Batman has brought to town…and it seems one of them has a plan to neutralize him. There’s a second Batman haunting Gotham’s rooftops and alleys—and this one has no qualms about murdering criminals, live and on tape. I don’t really like it, which surprising to me because I’ve heard so many good things about it. Part if the issue is that it’s the 500th “yeah but like, obviously Batman is mentally ill and let’s do a grounded, gritty version of him” take on Batman and I’ve seen it done better. my only critiques in regards to the art are Bruce Wayne's design, he looks much younger than what they are going for. He looks closer to a Robin than Bruce Wayne, and that the batsuit doesn't have blades on the gauntlets.

At some point in the book, I think an issue 2, Bruce says she's categorically the best detective the force has ever had. That to me was just: "Let's have other people be smart too. Let's have other people be smart, but not scheming villains." It's just somebody else who's out there, and it's her job to find him, so let's just make her a real obstacle. The story dismantles the idiotic claims that Bruce Wayne should just throw money at Gotham, and fix it that way as if that would work. But Blair Wong and Leslie Thompkins aren't the only characters creating complications in Bruce Wayne's crimefighting life. There's also the title imposter, who appears in the first issue and sends ripples through Gotham City, from the underworld to the police department, with their attempts to imitate Batman. For Tomlin, creating an imposter Caped Crusader was motivated in part by his decision to steer away from direct confrontations with bigger villain names in his comics writing debut, but it was also part of the grounded nature of the story. If Batman really was going on, dressing up in a costume, and actually having an impact on his city, it makes sense that someone else might try to set up a twisted mirror image of that. Couch, Aaron (2022-02-22). " 'Batman: The Imposter' Writer Mattson Tomlin Hasn't Let The Dark Knight Go". The Hollywood Reporter . Retrieved 2022-11-22.Keeping Batman on his heels for The Imposter also meant projecting a lot of strength onto the Leslie Thompkins character. A pillar of various Batman stories and a frequent ally of the Wayne family, Thompkins is a Gotham City hero in her own right, and it was important to Tomlin to place her front and center in this tale as someone who wouldn't be a Bruce Wayne enabler, but a Bruce Wayne interrogator. Mattson Tomlin, one of the screenwriters on the upcoming R-Batz movie, writes a grittier, more realistic version of the early days of Batman in Batman: The Imposter #1, and it’s pretty dull stuff! All the property destruction and chaos caused by Batman's war on crime is unlikely to endear him to Gotham's wealthy and powerful, who in turn pressurize the police into taking a tougher stance on the vigilante.

Otis Flannegan commits suicide in the police department, but not before revealing the Batman imposter had a hideout in the sewers. Batman confronts the imposter but the Gotham Police arrive and start shooting at Batman. Batman is wounded heavily and caught by Detective Wong. Batman reveals his identity to convince Detective Wong he isn't the killer, and she lets him go. Bruce Wayne meets up with Leslie Thompkins to tell her he won't be attending her therapy sessions. Leslie tries convincing Bruce that Batman isn't the solution to the crime problem, Bruce Wayne could donate to charity to make Gotham City a better place but Bruce ignores her. Bruce Wayne realizes the imposter is using guns from Lawrence Loman who wants to be the Kingpin of Gotham City. Batman meets up with Detective Wong to ask her for help and asks her to meet alone. They meet up, but Blair is shot by the Batman Imposter. As Batman fights the imposter, the Imposter reveals himself to be Blair's partner Hatcher who tells Batman the reason why he's killing the criminals is because of Batman and Gordon's mistake. Batman and Blair manage to defeat the imposter, and allows himself to be arrested by Blair. Batman asks Blair if she arrests him, would Gotham City be safe, and Blair decides to let him escape. Batman meets up with Arnold Wesker, but instead of turning Arnold in Batman leads him to Leslie Thompkins and visits his parents grave before vowing to help Gotham City as Bruce Wayne. [3] Publication [ edit ] Finally, the story’s pacing is fine. This is essentially a detective/mystery tale, in which Wong investigates Batman; Batman investigates the Imposter; and Leslie is trying to make sense of Bruce’s state of mind. There’s enough time for each scene to play out and for each character to get a proper introduction, so all of it makes for a well-balanced setup for the remaining parts of the story. It’s tough to talk about because of the the Writers Guild of it all. I had a wonderful time working with my friend and then found myself in this place where I was like, “man, I love Batman and I’m still thinking about it and I have all this brain energy that I’ve put into it, and nowhere to put any of this stuff.” So it was a while later, months after any of the time that I had with Matt Reeves. It then became, “actually, I think that there’s something that I could do here that could kind of be its own thing” and give me my time in Gotham where I really can go “this is what I have to say about this character.” And in a way that was really rewarding and lovely for me to get to go into it on my own terms like that. But it was definitely disconnected from from any of [the movie stuff]. Arrant, Chris (October 8, 2021). "Dr. Leslie Thompkins has words with Bruce in Batman: The Imposter #1 preview". GamesRadar+ . Retrieved February 17, 2022. What I find amazing is the level of detail with the world building that you’ve put in place here, whether it’s determining where these villains are in their evolution, or just where Gotham City is, in relation to having a Batman. There’s there’s a lot of stuff in here about the economic consequences of what happens when there’s somebody like Batman operating. There are hints of a class war element, there’s graffiti that speaks to very timely, real world elements. Is there a Bible for the world that you’ve created? How much of the previous two years of Batman’s life do you already have in your head?

Overall: This comic features great art, solid writing, and interesting characters! The pacing is good and the mystery element is strong. If you enjoy alternate takes on Batman and Gotham, then I definitely recommend this issue to you! The writing is amazing. People talk like actual people, the plot is interesting and complex while remaining airtight. With the entire might of the Gotham City Police Department and Gotham’s rich and powerful coming down on his head, Batman must find this imposter and somehow clear his name…but how can you prove your innocence from behind a mask? It’s just not that interesting to see familiar characters looking/behaving slightly differently than normal. Dr. Leslie Thompkins here is opposed to Bruce being Batman and has a no-nonsense attitude towards his behaviour, and there are new versions of Ventriloquist and Ratcatcher (an unusual addition), while Bruce looks to be around the same age as Robert Pattinson. The Batman is a new vigilante that seems to be cleaning up crime in Gotham City - but at the expense of big business. As the rich elite grumble about lost revenue, footage emerges of Batman seemingly executing prisoners on a rooftop - but is it the real Batman… or an imposter?

Having been a fan of his for years, working with Andrea Sorrentino is an absolute gift,” added Tomlin. “His vividly graphic art and truly genius layouts brought this story to new heights, and Jordie Bellaire’s astounding color work has truly spoiled me for my first outing with DC.” I love Batman: Earth One for this reason, because it felt so real. It just kind of felt like there’s room for some more of those…[and] the movie is so much Matt Reeves, and there’s ideas that I was having that don’t apply to the movie. So I found myself wondering what would just my version look like? What are some of the things that I would do? Batman: o impostor #01” mostra um Batman em início de carreira (é pego distraído, toma mais porrada do que estamos acostumados a ver; erra alvos e por aí vai) que está as voltas com um impostor que mata. The theme is not unseen but the whole atmosphere- think the Joker movie with Joaquim Phoenix, even darker- kind of makes it stand out. And yes, I do like these depressing noir stories. Don’t ask.BURBANK, CA (July 14, 2021) – This October, Batman fans get a new and different look at Gotham’s guardian as he begins his war on crime in Batman: The Imposter, a three-issue Prestige format series from DC. The series will debut in print and on participating digital platforms (English-language version) on Tuesday, October 12, 2021. In addition, the series will be collected in a hardcover format, available February 22, 2021. DC Publicity (July 16, 2021). "DC CONNECT #15 - SEE WHAT'S COMING IN OCTOBER!". DC Comics.com. DC Comics . Retrieved February 17, 2022. In October Sorrentino will be joining forces with The Batman co-writer Mattson Tomlin and celebrated colorist Jordie Bellaire to bring us BATMAN: THE IMPOSTER. The story will be set early in the Dark Knight’s career, and he will have to unravel the mystery surrounding a second Batman—someone who’s murdering criminals in our hero’s name—while evading the authorities and the corrupt elite! With a narrative that focuses on both an antagonist inspired by Batman’s vigilantism and the psychology of the flawed hero, all of which told in a grounded manner that evokes Year One, Tomlin isn’t breaking any new ground. The first issue is fairly standard in how it sets up in its players and central conflict, but the more you continue reading the book, does it fleshes out an emotional core.
