harm can be done by those who proffer an opinion when they are only in partial possession of the facts.

He was engaged in a battle for the very soul of France, a battle that would define how men could live and be free. I knew how I could tell the story of Huguenots, through women telling their stories going back generations. Piet holds whispered meetings with other Huguenots; a tailor is tortured to death for information; a woman lures a man of power into her bed. In 1912 in a Sussex churchyard, villagers gather on the evening when the spirits of those who will die in the coming year will be seen. Kate is the Co-Founder and Chair of the Board of the Women’s Prize for Fiction and in June 2013, was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to literature.

A story of love, war and religion; about the power of secrets and the impact of betrayal, it is Kate Mosse’s story-telling at its very best. And, when it comes down to it, who can be trusted, even amongst those you believe your closest friends? Ana, a young Spanish woman, lives in a small town on the north-west coast of Tenerife which lies in the shadow of a mighty volcano.

He is mistaken, for in Toulouse, the fires of religious conflict are blazing out of control, with neighbour turning on neighbour, and where old friendships are destined to turn into fatal enmities. She co-founded in 1996 the annual award for best UK-published English-language novel by a woman that is now known as the Women's Prize for Fiction. The plot and level of suspense was excellent and as gripping as any crime/thriller but for me the historical context made the book.As the vicious Wars of Religion rage in 16th century France, a young Catholic girl falls in forbidden love with a Protestant boy. The prologue, set in Franschoek, South Africa in 1862, indicates that the story doesn’t end in 16th century France. The author did an excellent job at capturing the turbulence, the sense of mistrust and need for survival during a period of political instability.

And though it is unclear whose will, and who is set to inherit, and what, exactly, is set to be inherited, it is clear that the diary's owner will not rest until the will--and any potential inheritor--have been buried once and for all. Emprendí con entusiasmo la lectura de esta nueva trilogía, después de haber leído, hace algún tiempo, El laberinto y Sepulcro de esta misma autora.Bringing sixteenth-century Languedoc vividly to life, Kate Mosse's The Burning Chambers is a gripping story of love and betrayal, mysteries and secrets; of war and adventure, conspiracies and divided loyalties . From the multi-million, number one bestselling author of Labyrinth and The Taxidermist's Daughter, comes The Burning Chambers: a gripping story of love and betrayal, mysteries and secrets, conspiracies and divided loyalties, for fans of Ken Follett and Dan Brown. In 1989, she and her husband bought a small house in Carcassonne in the Languedoc region of southwest France, [2] the inspiration for her bestselling trilogy of historical timeslip novels. In the story, we see the somewhat rebellious and spirited Minou and the cautious but driven Piet, but above all most of the characters, rightly or wrongly are shaped by their ideals, principles, and beliefs.

I knew nothing about this period of French history or the conflict between the Catholics and the Huguenots. Very soon it will be a race against time for Ana to help persuade the town that they are in danger and should flee before the volcano erupts and destroys their world. Esta novela histórica se desarrolla en Francia en el siglo XVI, y nos muestra la lucha de poder entre católicos y protestantes (hugonotes), siendo esta intolerancia religiosa, uno de los elementos más fuertes de la novela. Kate Mosse's much-loved non-fiction book shares the story of what it is like to care for those we love.

Overall, I was completely absorbed in this exciting and well-written story, and I recommend it to all historical fiction lovers, especially for the religious war time period. The prologue and part of the epilogue are the only two sections which relate to the larger series, the only bits which tell the reader there's more than this book as a standalone, and it's not clear that this is what they're for. As the identity of the mysterious ‘she’ referred to in Minou’s menacing message takes shape, the girl realises ‘she’ is bent on vengeance and Minou knows she must travel to a haunted chateaux in the foothills of the Pyrenees to unravel a long-kept secret.
