We’ve talked about this app throughout the review and it allows you to control the CDP-S100 with a graphical interface via your smartphone or tablet. Even if you eventually transition to an acoustic piano, it will still take some getting used to regardless of whether your digital piano had graded keys or not. Can anyone tell me the difference between the two if there is one, or is Costco just having a really good sale?

Furthermore, using the sustain pedal, sound effects (Reverb, Chorus), dual-mode (layering), and even the metronome ticking sound takes up additional notes of polyphony.

As a budget piano, there aren’t many extra features on the CDP-S100, but all the necessities are included. However, detailed sounds are important for practice purposes, especially in terms of touch response. I had a grand piano and also am incredibly impressed with how much digital keyboards have improved over the years in terms of touch and action. The better your problem and question is described, the easier it is for other Casio owners to provide you with a good answer. For example if I play a C sharp chord with 4 notes the white note (the F) is necessarily played quite far in because the others are black notes.

Read our MIDI Connection Guide to learn how to connect the keyboard to various devices and what you can do once connected. The speakers have front-facing speaker grills, so you’ll be able to hear a clear tone even when it’s not placed close to a wall. Alongside the previously mentioned PX-S series, Casio also introduced the CDP-S series during their 15 th anniversary, another slim form-factor keyboard aimed at keyboardists and beginners wanting a more affordable instrument. The main reason I recommend a lightweight digital piano for practice is if you’re always on the go, but that doesn’t seem like a large enough target demographic to warrant the new design. For my needs which are 90% piano practice and 10% use as MIDI controller, this was an incredible deal. If you want to practice with a backing track, you can connect your smartphone or music player to the Audio In (3.

I always thought it was my problem until one day I connected the p115 to my MacBook and used the GarageBand piano sound only to realize it is so much easier to play forte, never wanted a Yamaha digital ever since. To me, the PHA-4 just overall feels more realistic, including the key movement, the key pivot length, etc. This Duet Mode is convenient when two players, such as a parent and child or a teacher and student, practice together. This review acknowledges the not-great sound, but this lede is *really* buried among less important information. The key action is relatively silent but the compact nature of the chassis means the keys have a shorter pivot than the competition.Critical listening is one of the most valuable exercises that any beginner can practice; otherwise, it’s hard to improve. Most keyboards relying on key combinations (like Yamaha’s YDP 144 and Casio’s PX-S1000) require the use of a manual, since there’s no on-board guidance. The benefit of feeling more like a real piano is that you can play with far greater expression and dynamic range. There are a number of strong competitors that you might want to add to your list along with the CDP-S100.
