Description

My favorite element of the game is the hidden end game goals. Each goal defines a different type of strategy that you can follow and which can radically alter the course of your game play. Since you still score all of the other players’ end of game bonuses, there’s also the added element of deciphering what scoring bonuses the other players have. This is an exceptionally cool opportunity for subtle interaction in the game. Each round you will be allocated a number of dice depending on how much presence you have in three buildings. There are three colours of dice and each one leans in a certain direction more than the others - yellow are generally better for earning coins, red for fighting of events and white for rebuilding the Cathedral. Troyes developed as early as the Roman era, when it was known as Augustobona Tricassium. It stood at the hub of numerous highways, primarily the Via Agrippa. The city has a rich historical past, from the Tricasses tribe to the liberation of the city on 25 August 1944 during the Second World War, including the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains, the Council of Troyes, the marriage of Henry V and Catherine of France, and the Champagne fairs to which merchants came from all over Christendom. The city has a rich architectural and urban heritage: many buildings are protected as historical monuments, including the half-timbered houses (mainly of the 16th century) that survived in the old town. They have contributed to Troyes being designated as a City of Art and History. The game was designed by Sebastien Dujardin, the manager of Pearl Games, Xavier Georges, and Alain Orban. The illustrations were done by Alexandre Roche. Game Components During the Middle Ages, Troyes was an important international trading town. It was the namesake of troy weight for gold a standard of measurement developed here. [8] The Champagne cloth fairs and the revival of long-distance trade, together with new extension of coinage and credit, were the drivers of the medieval economy of Troyes.

The game ends after the fourth round is completed. At the end of the game, players score points based on victory point tokens they have accrued throughout the game, points for the spots on the tradesmen, negative points for each row of the cathedral they do not have a cube in, points based on events they have cubes on, and finally, points for hidden bonus cards. The hidden bonus cards score bonuses based on all players’ bonus cards, not just their own. These bonuses range from the number of workers you have in buildings, to the number of cubes you have in the cathedral, to the number of event cards you’ve collected. Cards with a delayed effect: these cards can be distinguished from those with an immediate effect by the hourglass icon in the lower-right corner of the card. Next, the start player rolls the dice associated with the gray citizens placed on the 3 buildings, and places them on a district of the city square not belonging to any player (the gray district). The dice represent the workforce of the citizens of the city, and they enable the players to execute their actions. Chapter 28 of James Rollins' sixth Sigma Force novel, The Doomsday Key (2009), is named "Troyes, France," as the city plays an important role in the plot. It mitigates the sharp cuts of dice stealing somewhat, but without eliminating dice stealing altogether, so it will soften the game slightly. Whether or not this is a good thing will depend on your gaming preferences. The overall feel, however, will remain largely unchanged. Troyes – ConclusionsEach player gets a purple die, which they roll with the rest of their dice. This purple die can act as a die of any color and cannot be bought by other players. This is another great opportunity for mitigation of randomness since these dice can’t be bought and they can act as any color. The third module from the ladies is the ramparts, where players have a guard they move around to gain a variety of bonus actions. Some actions are available all the time, others can only be used if they are present on the revealed action cards. Actions: Build a Cathedral Place the neutral citizens, the dice, the deniers, and the victory points (VPs) beside the board, forming the general supply. Each player chooses a color and starts with: Troyes had a population of 61,996 inhabitants in 2018. It is the center of the Communauté d'agglomération Troyes Champagne Métropole, which was home to 170,145 inhabitants.

I suppose anti-dice-game people might not be persuaded either, but this occupies similar territory to Castles of Burgundy insofar as it really doesn’t feel like the rolls of the dice are what ultimately determine the outcome. They’re a central aspect of the game, yet somehow it’s your strategic decisions, not the exact numbers you get, that take center stage in how the game plays out.
