Answer is… run real light on infantry, convert lots of monsters and vehicles and Rough Riders and Ogryns, and lose plenty of games! At least that’s my technique. Closest thing to ‘real’ advice would be “paint in squads of ten, break them up with fun centerpiece models.”

Likewise, the officer on the right uses the standard color palette without deviation. Just a touch or two of red is all you need to add a little punch to a model. Once we’re happy with it we can thin down Zandri Dust to the same consistency as before and apply it over the very bottom areas of the armour. Zandri Dust is lighter than Steel Legion Drab and thus perfect for adding a highlight, as real-world dust tends to spread out and get lighter as it settles. The Imperium is massive, and its core strength comes from its people. There is rarely, if ever, an Imperial conflict that doesn’t involve the Astra Militarum and its forces. As such, they’ve been involved in every major conflict in the Imperium’s history, from the Horus Heresy and the battle for Terra, where Solar Auxiliaries helped defend the Emperor’s Palace, to the Fall of Cadia and the ensuing Indomitus Crusade. The guard are made of a great many regiments whose deeds are legendary, from the Steel Legions of Armageddon to the indomitable forces of Cadia, who held even after the planet itself was destroyed. Where to Read MoreWith the rest of the models done its just painting the rims in Dryad Bark and adding tufts, for this army I am using these ones from Gamers Grass: Chaos Space Marines: The Chaos Space Marines are a faction of traitorous, corrupted Space Marines in Warhammer 40K, known for their twisted, demonic weaponry and armor. The Steel Legion Drab paint is a great choice for creating a realistic, weathered finish on their armor, machinery, and vehicles.

Brown spray (for undercoat) – GW don’t seem to do one, I decided to try this. Nice colour to it, not too far from Rhinox Hide.I tried to carry over a lot of the color palette from my infantry to make my tanks look like they belong, but I also didn’t want them to look like solid khaki lumps on the tabletop. I chose to go with suicidally bold squadron markings. mix of Vallejo Game Color Dead Flesh and Pallid Wych Flesh but only on the edge of the yellow blobs The steel metallics were basecoated with Vallejo Metal Color Exhaust Manifold, washed with GW Nuln Oil, and highlighted with Vallejo Metal Color Dark Aluminium. This looks a little bright at this stage, but it will get toned down with the oil wash and matte varnish at the end. Mix in a little more Warboss Green and layer up again, concentrating on raised areas where light would hit
