When sharing this book with my class, it really made them think and predict about how the animal’s problem could be solved. Can you talk us through how you went about making this choice and whether you experimented with other colour concepts first? Part of your journey into illustration and design led you to complete an MA in Children's Book Illustration at Anglia Ruskin. If you like to analyse stories and ask questions and think about why the author or illustrator made certain choices, there's lots here to discuss.

Can you share with us some of these early sketches and talk to us about some of the ideas that remained in the final piece and some that did not quite make it. Working with a limited colour palette and negative space is one of the elements that make Flooded such a success. While we watch the growing distress of the smaller animals, we’re aware that there’s a sort of inverted pride in this inattention. This page is an allegory to the attitudes we have seen towards climate change over the years, and it only seems to becoming a more pressing issue as more and more people are adversely affected, through droughts, wildfires etc.It was selected by the Unpublished Children's Books Showcase, as the third most voted project, with 29 votes from the jury. I really enjoy working in traditional printing processes, especially lithography, so this was just an experiment which ended up inspiring the start of the story. No one minds at first as it was just a little bit of water, but as the city carries on with its usual rhythm, the smaller animals start to realise that it is all becoming a rather big problem. Can I be cheeky and ask for a tour of your workspace - it was great to get a snippet from your video.

Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first. I haven't charted out my visits for the summer term, but I'm sure there are several in the south) and thanks so much for being so fantastic! I always enjoyed drawing people in cafes and markets, but it’s something that I don't always find the time to do, so this module forced me to do it non-stop and reminded me of the importance of it.

There is an image, based on the Oxford Circus print, where a panda bear was talking with a tiger on the tube platform, blaming the politicians about what was happening. I don’t remember any particular book that influenced me in my childhood but there are definitely illustrators who inspired me during my studies when I hoped that I could become one, such as Ana Juan, Javier Zabala, Rebecca Dautremer, Esther Gili, Elena Odriozola, Isabelle Arsenault, etc.

Does the book contain anything that teachers would wish to know about before recommending in class (strong language, sensitive topics etc. After many years working as an illustrator / designer, her passion for picture books led her to study a MA in Children's Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art and graduated in 2021. The Klaus Flugge Prize is funded personally by Klaus Flugge and run independently of Andersen Press. Like exceptional picture books such as It Fell from the Sky, this book has hidden depths, such assurance in its skilled presentation and then such meaning. We really liked this story, the meaning and the thought behind it and also the slightly quirky illustrations that bring it to life.

All the animals ignore the obvious and go about their busy lives, disjointed from one another and preoccupied by their own problems. You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! Observing people on the tube, in museums, cafes, etc, really influenced Lost, and Flooded of course! It’s a fantastic independent book seller that will actually be responsive and select appropriate books for you. Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do.At first they adjust by wearing wellies and splashing in puddles until the water rises beyond ankle deep. Flooded is a fun story illustrating how small problems can grow into bigger problems if we don’t give them enough attention. Preoccupied by their own concerns, they deal with the practical inconveniences of rising water in humorous and inventive ways until finally they listen to the one voice urging action, and work together on a solution. It's a very light touch story that could be enjoyed as it is, but which could also lead to discussions about more serious topics. I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books.
