Life's What You Make It' was the obvious choice for a single. A simple piano hook repeats itself from start to finish, and variations on a single guitar line are heard again and again, but the groove is so good that it never gets tiring. Mark Hollis has a good chance to showcase his unique voice and vocal talents, and he brings his best. Piano, harmonica, guitars, and even horns are all featured prominently in the mix. The musicianship is so good that it could make Steely Dan blush. The opener 'Happiness Is Easy' is like a jigsaw puzzle where each instrument constitutes a single piece. The use of organ is particularly effective on 'Living In Another World', adding a degree of tension to Mark's already emotive singing. And the harmonica really pulls the song along after the chorus, ensuring that it doesn't lose an ounce of momentum.
