Description

Life's What You Make It' was the obvious choice for a single. A simple piano hook repeats itself from start to finish, and variations on a single guitar line are heard again and again, but the groove is so good that it never gets tiring. Mark Hollis has a good chance to showcase his unique voice and vocal talents, and he brings his best. Matrix / Runout (Variant 6 Side B Runout, etched (“11” in DM 11 is stamped)): ST-17179-2 1A2HZ DM 11 After listening to Talk Talk's previous record ('It's My Life') and the one that would follow this ('Spirit Of Eden'), it's crystal clear that the band reached their peak on 'The Colour Of Spring'. Why this isn't recognized in the music community I don't think I'll ever understand.

Matrix / Runout (Variant 4 Side A Runout, etched ("10" in DM 10 is stamped)): ST-17179 2 1A2HZ DM 10 The Colour Of Spring' is a beautifully-orchestrated collection of music that features plenty of "real" instrumentation. Piano, harmonica, guitars, and even horns are all featured prominently in the mix. The musicianship is so good that it could make Steely Dan blush. The opener 'Happiness Is Easy' is like a jigsaw puzzle where each instrument constitutes a single piece. Individually, the bass, piano, and acoustic guitar are a bit sparse, but they all fit together with the percussion and singing to form a complete musical picture.Matrix / Runout (Variant 1 Side A Runout, etched (“12” in DM 12 is stamped)): ST-17179-1 1A2HZ DM 12 There are a few ambient moments that foreshadow the direction the band would take next, such as 'Chameleon Day' and parts of 'April 5th', which are the only real lowlights. Matrix / Runout (Variant 1 Side B Runout, etched (“14” in DM 14 is stamped)): ST-17179 2 1A2HZ DM 14 Matrix / Runout (Variant 3 Side B Runout, etched (“14” in DM 14 is stamped)): ST-17179 2 1A2HZ DM 14 Matrix / Runout (Variant 6 Side A Runout, etched (“17” in DM 17 is stamped)): ST-17179-1 1A2HZ DM 17

The use of organ is particularly effective on 'Living In Another World', adding a degree of tension to Mark's already emotive singing. And the harmonica really pulls the song along after the chorus, ensuring that it doesn't lose an ounce of momentum.
