Aping Lynch’s visual style and elliptical cuts (somewhat pretentiously I’m afraid) this is nevertheless a really interesting watch. A brand new 4K restoration of David Lynch’s 2006 surrealist masterwork starring Laura Dern in one of her finest roles.

When a warring martial arts sect fights over a pair of mythical swords, the results are breathtakingly epic, in one of director Wong Jing’s most under-appreciated wuxia extravaganzas. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. One slightly annoying thing about the Criterion Blu Ray is that More Things That Happened has no subtitles—not even for the Polish lines, which are meant to be subtitled. Disjointed editing, extreme closeups, films within films and an absence of easy explanations amidst the murk make Inland Empire a challenging watch. One thing I did find annoying was that any polish dialogue isn't subtitled unless you turn on the english subtitles. However, it’s a shame the short film wasn’t included, as it was amusing, if off, as an interview with Lynch while he cooks dinner. Nikki Grace (Laura Dern) is an actress preparing for her biggest role, a Hollywood movie from an acclaimed director (Jeremy Irons) opposite an amorous leading man (Justin Theroux). Arguably no director in cinema history has come closer to allowing the audience to experience a waking dream (or nightmare) quite like Lynch.

All created and experienced by the knower on the screen of conscious awareness, where the real Self is the silent untouchable observer of the screen of experience, realising that they are not all that which they are observing.

That is also the case on this Studio Canal release, as I suspected it would be since it is touted as the 4K remaster. Blues and reds also have a bit of trouble blending cleanly into blacks, creating all sorts of blocking patterns. An aspiring actrees finds herself trapped in the plot of a cursed Polish movie's remake she's starring in. The film (done in sections over a few years) was shot in 640x480i digital resolution using a consumer-grade video camera, a DSR-PD150.

The audio presented for this release was remastered in January 2022 by the film’s original rerecording mixers–Lynch, Dean Hurley, and Ron Eng working from the original 5. Inland Empire, however, dispenses with a coherent narrative thread pretty early on, resulting in a film that is remarkably obtuse and opaque, even by David’s Lynch’s standards.
