However, I do feel that the pace does slow down considerably in parts owing to excessive detail (mostly in the first half of the novel) which also renders the narrative a tad too lengthy. The author also tried to imply a little bit of a romance, or at least an interest, between Gemma and Cliff.

I was gripped by Cliff's story and by the time we got to the McMasters conservatory I was completely in the book's clutches. The murder academy of McMasters was an interesting concept and I enjoyed the Professors and Students. He soon discovers that his thinking is anything but perfect and the police show up on his doorstep moments later. An entertaining mixture of murder mystery, tentative romance and comedy, which ranged from sly innuendo to pretty dark. It's not just for the purpose of a joke, it's for the purpose of making this ridiculous idea seem credible.

Readers of "Murder Your Employer" are peppered with references to certain classes and credos for that very reason. I can’t wait to read more by this author – and hopefully more from the McMasters Conservatory of Applied Arts. One of the things that I missed at first that really would have helped me was knowing that this book is set in the 1950s as I struggled for a while with the time setting. As Holmes takes hairpin turns from irony back to sincerity for his three McMasters pupils, his zany storytelling will delight fans of The Twyford Code by Janice Hallett, all Sherlock Holmes stories, and even those who love tales of arcane and Gothic institutions.Or they fail, in which case they are humanely killed and leave in an attractive casket containing their ashes. To ensure that after a failed deletion, the student does not tell the authorities about their education at the Conservatory, they are deleted. With humor, intrigue and surprises, this book will keep you guessing, yet desperately hoping to find out if each student can pull off their thesis and graduate from the McMasters Conservatory for the Applied Arts, which is literally a life or death proposition. Slow burn first half and eventually ramping up, all the backstory comes into play and becomes worth the read.

There are kitchen gardens so the food is fresh and there’s an ice cream van to complete the bucolic setting. I paired my reading with the superb audio narration by Neil Patrick Harris and Simon Vance which made for an entertaining and immersive experience. The characters only had a little bit of backstory and were solely focussed on preparing and executing their murders. The weird part is that a lot of his story is presented as journal entries addressing the anonymous sponsor who made his studies at McMasters possible. It felt a bit gimmicky and it took a while until I realized there was actually a story here, and not an actual guide (a tweak in the description could help).

About the book (blurb from Penguin Random House SA) One hot summer day, stuck in traffic on her way to pick up the cake for her daughter’s sixteenth birthday party, Grace Adams snaps. Posts include homicides, missing and unidentified people, wrongful convictions, and forensics as related to these cases. He was a gullible doofus at times but I was rooting for him the whole time and felt proud of him as his skills approved.Change country: -Select- Afghanistan Albania Algeria American Samoa Andorra Angola Anguilla Antigua and Barbuda Argentina Armenia Aruba Australia Austria Azerbaijan Republic Bahamas Bahrain Bangladesh Belgium Belize Benin Bermuda Bhutan Bolivia Bosnia and Herzegovina Botswana Brazil British Virgin Islands Brunei Darussalam Bulgaria Burkina Faso Burundi Cambodia Cameroon Canada Cape Verde Islands Cayman Islands Central African Republic Chad Chile China Colombia Comoros Cook Islands Costa Rica Cyprus Czech Republic Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) Democratic Republic of the Congo Denmark Djibouti Dominica Dominican Republic Ecuador Egypt El Salvador Equatorial Guinea Eritrea Estonia Ethiopia Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) Fiji Finland France Gabon Republic Gambia Georgia Germany Ghana Gibraltar Greece Greenland Grenada Guam Guatemala Guernsey Guinea Guinea-Bissau Guyana Haiti Honduras Hong Kong Hungary Iceland India Indonesia Iraq Ireland Italy Jamaica Japan Jersey Jordan Kazakhstan Kenya Kiribati Kuwait Kyrgyzstan Laos Latvia Lebanon Lesotho Liberia Liechtenstein Lithuania Luxembourg Macau Macedonia Madagascar Malawi Malaysia Maldives Mali Malta Marshall Islands Mauritania Mauritius Mayotte Mexico Micronesia Moldova Monaco Mongolia Montenegro Montserrat Morocco Mozambique Namibia Nauru Nepal Netherlands Netherlands Antilles New Zealand Nicaragua Niger Nigeria Niue Norway Oman Pakistan Palau Paraguay Peru Philippines Poland Portugal Puerto Rico Qatar Republic of Croatia Republic of the Congo Romania Rwanda Saint Helena Saint Kitts-Nevis Saint Lucia Saint Pierre and Miquelon Saint Vincent and the Grenadines San Marino Saudi Arabia Senegal Serbia Seychelles Sierra Leone Singapore Slovakia Slovenia Solomon Islands Somalia South Africa South Korea Spain Sri Lanka Suriname Swaziland Sweden Switzerland Taiwan Tajikistan Tanzania Thailand Togo Tonga Trinidad and Tobago Tunisia Turkey Turkmenistan Turks and Caicos Islands Tuvalu Uganda United Arab Emirates United Kingdom United States Uruguay Uzbekistan Vanuatu Vatican City State Vietnam Virgin Islands (U. There are some parts that were slow and dragged a bit, but overall this is a highly original tale that has widespread appeal. We follow all three candidates through their orientation, training and ultimately their “thesis” which translates into how to apply all they have learned in executing their plan, failing which has its own set of consequences. At the start of the book, we are introduced to Cliff Iverson who for reasons best known only to him at this time is determined to kill his former boss in a way that he hopes will also ensure that he does not get arrested for murder.
