The band continued to jam and soon they had more than enough material for one album so decided to release a double LP but they are running out of time and they had to return to England because their visa were running out. Clapton's pained yearning permeates everything here. Works such as the swampy "Tell the Truth," the pleading "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?," and blues-drenched "Have You Ever Loved a Woman?" attest to his raw-nerve discomfort, guilt, and desire. He leaves teardrops on the microphone stand and blood on the floor, singing and playing as if his life depends on it and if, by some miracle, the music will serve as both a confessional and apology to Harrison. It's all magnified by Clapton achieving a spiritual and sonic oneness with his band, which matches his high-stakes precision with a rolling, tumbling looseness.

Some people take issue with the inclusion of Little Wing on here, stating that the cover doesn’t do the original Hendrix song a shred of justice. Well, I beg to differ. If you are going to cover a song, make it your own. There is no question that Clapton and the boys took the essence of this song and jammed it into a blues format they felt worked for them. Sure, the iconic riff is not there, but the “flow” we talked about before, is all Clapton in his prime throughout the song. A fitting tribute to Hendrix who had just passed at the time of the recordings. Both of them were steeped in blues, but they still had two totally different approaches to the way they let their guitar speak for them, and that is why the last minute inclusion of Little Wing makes perfect sense. In 1993, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab gave the original 1970 stereo master tapes meticulous treatment for the first time and pressed the album on an expensive, limited edition 24kt gold CD. This MFSL 20-bit remastering of Layla preserved more of the fidelity of the original recordings than had previously been heard on CD. The MFSL version was significantly cleaner than the first CD releases, but also removed some of " Wall of Sound"-like technique that was added during mastering for vinyl. Polydor's 1996 remaster as part of the Eric Clapton Remasters series was done in much the same manner as the MFSL version, but on a standard aluminum CD at a normal price. The Polydor 2004 SACD/CD dual-layer hybrid release remixed the album in 5.1 surround sound on the SACD layer and remastered the 1970 stereo version yet again on the CD layer.Sandford, Christopher (1999). The emergence of Hendrix, shortly afterwards made the hype seem even more preposterous. Cream and Blind Faith were two of the most hyped bands in history. Clapton had just released his remarkably poor first solo album in July 1970 - an album unimpressive in all departments. Four months later, astoundingly, Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs appears! Love lost, unattainable love, forbidden love, heartbreak, obsession, infatuation, envy, pleas for understanding... and expressing all this in a musical statement.

Graham Tarry: Never been a Clapton fan, so listened to this for the first time today. Other than Layla there are three other songs that I like, but it's too bluesy for my taste Maxwell Marco Martello: One of my favourite records ever. The story behind it is intriguing (Eric’s affair with Patti Boyd), the band is on fire, and the late great Duane Allman is the icing on the cake. a b "Derek And The Dominos* - Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs". Leopold, Todd (3 February 2005). "Harrison, Clapton, and their muse". CNN . Retrieved 14 June 2011. Due to the circumstances of its composition, "Layla" is defined by two movements, each marked by a riff. The first movement, which was recorded in the key of D minor for choruses and C-sharp minor for verses, [25] is centred around the "signature riff", a guitar piece using hammer-ons, pull-offs and power chords. The first section contains the overdub-heavy slide guitar solo, played by Allman. By placing his slide at points beyond the end of the fretboard, Allman was able to play notes at a higher pitch than could be played with standard technique. Dowd referred to this as "notes that aren't on the instrument." [16] [ timeneeded] They duo give a beautiful nod to the other guitar god of the time, Jimi Hendrix, covering Little Wing in almost as dreamy a fashion as the original. Having performed the song a handful of times during the live shows staged to help the band gel before recording Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, it was meant to be an ode to a living hero. But, with his tragic death in September, only about a week after they recorded the song, it became a touching tribute to a lost legend. Hendrix was only 27 years old.Robbins, Ira (10 April 1990).
