Behind these friendly central characters, lurks the longer darker tradition of Macbeth’s crones or terrible fairy tale figures like the witch in Hansel and Gretel.

Bella Broomstick Series by Lou Kuenzler - Goodreads

It's her first day at Merrymeet Primary School, which is bound to be better than Creepy Castle School for Wizards and Witches, where Bella almost blew up the dungeon. The technical storage or access is strictly necessary for the legitimate purpose of enabling the use of a specific service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user, or for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network.Bella secretly casts a real spell (hint: it involves a lot of bunnies), but it doesn’t go the way she had planned. Ants are another good one, but it might take a while to train them all to stand in a nice neat line while you measured yourself against them. Once that one is done, I will start on Book Three which is going to be all about celebrating Halloween for the first time in her new human village. I thought this was a good book and I like the characters and my favourite one was the skeleton witch teacher.

Bella Broomstick - Penguin Random House

This book is about a witch who has an aunt that won’t let her sleep she keeps waking her up in the night and telling her that she is a bad witch and will never be any good at doing spells.

But, nine times out of ten, no matter how well-meaning, magic ups the stakes and makes things far worse than they were before. Think of the glorious comic havoc caused every time Samantha twitched her nose in the television series Bewitched. Her nasty Aunt Hemlock sends her to live in Person World, and she isn’t allowed to do any magic ever again. Bella Broomstick is about a young witch who is so hopeless at doing magic she is expelled from the Magic Realm and sent to live in the Person World where is fostered by human beings instead. We’re really enjoying Bella Broomstick as a read aloud – it’s got nice pacing, and is ideal for Smallest (age 6).

In fact, she’s on her fourth or fifth read of the book now – it’s safe to say it’s another favourite. Follow Bella’s magical, funny adventures as she tries to make sense of life in Merrymeet Village alongside Rascal, the mischievous kitten, always ready to lend a paw.As a parent, I’ve found Lou Kuenzler’s books to have the right amount of humour for a child H’s age to understand – and I like how her characters get up to fun adventures – and most importantly, talk in a way she can relate – and they make her laugh. Close your eyes now and I bet you can instantly picture Walt Disney’s terrifying wicked witch holding out the shiny red apple to Snow White.
