Russell Foster, Professor of Circadian Neuroscience at Oxford University said that "when people are very sleep-deprived they can only lay down negative memories in their long-term memory." You just need to be aware that sugar can often be a substitute when actually what you need is an early night/some time off/time away from a phone..

The title is based on her most frequently shared piece of advice. “On the one hand it’s flippant, trivial. It literally sums up how much better I feel about myself – how much more confident, how much glintier-eyed, how much better able to cope and respond – if I have freshly washed hair. But on the other hand, it is a reminder that I must look after myself, that I must put my own oxygen mask on first.”

The idea for the book came from the questions Hindmarch received while delivering talks on her business journey. Audiences always wanted to know more about the bigger picture. In response, she has written a revealing manual covering everything from dealing with investors to navigating a family illness, all with razor-sharp discernment and a self-deprecating honesty. You’re known first and foremost as a creative and a designer, but you’ve got an incredibly business savvy head. How did you learn that part of your job? The book is brimming with her tips and ideas on how to be a working mother/parent, how to run an organisation, how to be more organised and tidy, how to look after your kids (and ideas on how to get other people involved), how to be a step-parent, how to be a partner, how to find a mentor, how to care for ageing parents, and how to be yourself authentically (and trust yourself), and how to let go of the idea of perfection. I love lists and keep 2 digital diaries (work & persona) and an old fashion journal to jot down to-do lists, thoughts & feelings. A diverse workforce is vital, both ethically and commercially, but my position on how to achieve this has changed. Most of my career has been in the era of ‘equality for women in the workplace’. It has not been achieved yet – clearly – but until recently I was somewhat skeptical about the various efforts made, and used to say, ‘I don’t want to be put on a board just because I’m wearing a skirt.’ I felt that progress was being made and would continue to be, naturally and organically, as women continued to deliver and prove their worth. I argued against quotas or other measures to ‘force’ change, as it seemed to me that they could undermine women.

If In Doubt, Wash Your Hair: A Manual for Life: Hindmarch

I grew up with business as part of our family language and culture – I think I helped my father write some of his invoices as a child. I love the creative and business sides of the job with equal measure.

I don’t have the time to read nearly as much as I would want to, but a special mention has to go to Lorraine Candy’s new book, 101 Things Only Mothers Of Teenage Girls Know. I am sure I could have benefitted from much of this empathetic insight and would recommend it to anyone with teenage girls. The book “If in doubt, wash your hair ” is a memoir by Anya Hindmarch, a globally renowned entrepreneur, the founder of an award winning global brand known for it’s craftmanship and creativity, a mother of five and also a step mother. In this book, she shares her life experiences from the challenges of managing business, family and her own personal happiness at the same time. Scientists from China and Sri Lanka are conducting a joint marine scientific activities on board a Chinese research vessel, a senior official said Tuesday, amid concerns voiced by India and the US

With the exception of anger/aggression (which should be worked out in private) ...emotion is a female superpower and if women have an edge in business, it is in fact often because they do bring emotion to the workplace. A growing business is built on emotion. I realise, though, that it is not the same in all organisations, and we could be better even in my own organisation, for example in the imagery we use to advertise our products. There is a lot more work to do. Businesses need to consciously resist the temptation to hire ‘people like them’. We need to realise we are hugely disadvantaged if we do not hire a workforce that represents our customers. We need to ensure a pipeline of good candidates. And we need, perhaps, to force the issue for a bit, to create more role models as we have done for women.Faith In Nature shampoo: the grapefruit and orange is my favourite wake up fragrance and puts me in a great mood.
