Description

In 1932, at the age of 65, Wilder published the first of her eight Little House books, Little House in the Big Woods. It told the story of her early childhood years in Wisconsin and was a huge hit with readers. Wilder was 76 years old when she finished the final book in her Little House series. Yet without the help of her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, the series may never have reached a wide audience. She got her start writing about her farming experience Donald Zochert (Chicago: H. Regnery, 1976), Laura: The Life of Laura Ingalls Wilder, ISBN 0809281740, 260 pp., OCLC 1959445

Laura handed him the smooth, polished cow-horn full of gunpowder. The top of the horn was a little metal cap. Pa filled this cap full of the gun-powder and poured the powder down the barrel of the gun. Then he shook the gun a little, and tapped the barrel, to be sure that all the powder was together in the bottom.Pamela Smith Hill (South Dakota Hist. Soc., 2007), Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Writer's Life, South Dakota biography series, ISBN 097779556X, 244 pp., Google Books Then he laid away the traps, and he took his fiddle out of its box and began to play. That was the best time of all. Chapter 2. Winter DAYS and Winter NIGHTS. Pa skinned the deer carefully and salted and stretched the hides, for he would make soft leather of them. Then he cut up the meat, and sprinkled salt over the pieces as he laid them on a board.

Pa jumped out of bed, snatched his gun from the wall, and ran outdoors. Then Laura heard the gun go off, once, twice. In addition, simplified versions of the original series have been published for younger children in chapter and picture book form. This Little House in the Big Woods Activities and Pioneer Unit uses the Montessori approach to learning.
