If you would like to support my work in creating content, please do so in any of the following ways: Rotation also allows beds time to recover, and provides a gardener with the opportunity to add nutrients to the soil. Creating a zone for fruit can make it easier to provide protection from birds. Covering fruit with a net is often necessary to prevent wildlife enjoying a harvest at a plot holder's expense. A square or rectangular zone is easier to protect by creating a temporary or permanent fruit cage. Herbs What can I say other than a superb publication from the king of gardening. Here he applies his extensive knowledge to getting the most from your allotment with such enthusiasm you can’t wait to get down your plot and start digging and planting! All bases are covered and presented in a way that the complete novice can understand, but also, for the more experienced grower, provides useful info for example if growing a particular vegetable for the first time. This book won’t disappoint , thank you Mr T. The third book, Vegetable, Fruit & Herb Growing in Small Spaces, was based on our experience when we had a completely paved over, concrete garden. It tells how to make a small garden productive as well as decorative and still leave room for the children to have fun in. Even if you just have a patio, there are things you can grow and eat. Storing & Preserving Your Produce

Incidentally, the flavour of any vegetable doesn’t depend just on the variety but is altered according to where it is grown and the conditions. When you think of wine and those experts saying things like ‘from the chalky slopes on the south side of the vineyard’ it’s not so surprising that a variety of potato grown in one place can taste differently when grown in another and that taste can change depending on the weather. When you have an allotment or start to look at putting your name down for an allotment it can be extremely exciting. However, when you take on your allotment it can be challenging, exciting, rewarding, stressful, and relaxing. Having an allotment though is the best thing around as the rewards outway all the negatives. From sowing your seeds, watching them germinate, and then producing crops is an amazing feeling. When you harvest your first crop and taste them it is so delicious as it’s so natural with no added chemicals on them to preserve them. Finding the best allotment books can be stressful.I have not included herbs in the example allotment layout above, but these can be a great addition – especially for a keen cook. Many herbs produce flowers that are loved by bees and other beneficial insects. What I love about this book is that it gives you something that many others have missed and that is what you need to do BEFORE you get your allotment. Had I gotten the plot I wanted, for instance, it would have been completely wrong and a nightmare to tend. With crop rotation of vegetables, the distance from the water source to thirsty plants will change every year. However, some perennial plants with permanent positions on a plot, like fruit bushes and fruit trees, can be positioned far away from a water source. The roots of these plants will go deep, and therefore will not require frequent watering. Soft fruit like strawberries, and especially raspberries, have shallower roots and will need watering more frequently. Positioning these plants near a water source can save effort. Seasonal chapters explain what to do and when and how you can take your vegetable growing to the next step. These aren’t fancy new techniques, they’re tried and tested and they work. And this is a fabulous book to use to plan your vegetable garden. Get started now and buy the Grow Your Own Veg Planner here.
