This leaflet is about the most common type of mouth ulcers, which are aphthous mouth ulcers. At least 1 in 5 people can develop aphthous mouth ulcers at some stage in their lives. Women are affected more often than men. Mouth ulcers are very common, with over 20% of people having recurrent ulcers at some stage in their life. Mouth ulcers cannot be caught by kissing, or by sharing drinks and utensils, because they are not caused by an infection. How can I prevent mouth ulcers? Re-apply the gel, following steps 1 to 3 above, as necessary for each ulcer. The aim is to keep the ulcer area(s) protected with a coating of gel. As a guide, each application should normally last for an hour or more, although, on occasions, eating or drinking may make it necessary to re-apply the gel. In some cases, Iglu may remain in place for several hours, as it has strong adhesive properties.

Oral lichen planus. This condition can cause itchy rashes and lacelike, white sores inside your mouth. Oral lichen planus is an immune system response and most commonly affects women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB) age 50 or older. Iglu Sugar Free Pastilles are a completely different way to ease the discomfort of mouth ulcers, dissolving slowly in the mouth to bring soothing relief. In rare cases, mouth ulcers that don’t heal can be a sign of mouth cancer. You should call your dental practice or GP if an ulcer has been present for three weeks or more. They will carry out remote consultation over the phone/video before seeing you in person in the practice if required. Certain tablets which are left to dissolve in the mouth, when they are supposed to be swallowed whole. For example, aspirin can do this if kept to dissolve against a gum. Alendronate, taken to treat 'thinning' of the bones (osteoporosis), can also cause mouth ulcers if it is not taken according to the instructions.Certain health conditions, including many autoimmune diseases, can also cause mouth ulcers. These conditions may include: Remember, not all mouth ulcers are aphthous ulcers. Other types of ulcer can occur in the mouth and mouth ulcers can be a sign of an underlying illness or disease.

Oral thrush. An overgrowth of yeast called Candida albicans causes this fungal infection inside your mouth. It commonly happens after antibiotic treatment or when your immune system isn’t as strong as it usually is. Oral thrush causes red and creamy white mouth sores and patches. Do not take Iglu Sugar Free Pastilles if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to benzalkonium chloride solution, compound benzoin tincture or any of the other ingredients in this medicine. A mouth ulcer is a sore that appears anywhere inside your mouth. These sores are usually red, yellow or white, and you might have one or several. close-up image of an ulcerMouth ulcers are painful sores inside the mouth that can appear on the tongue and gums or inside the cheeks and lips. The ulcer, which is usually circular with a yellow or white centre and a raised red rim, is an area where the surface of the mouth's lining has been removed. This means that nerve cells are exposed, causing pain and discomfort, particularly when eating certain foods. They occur singly or in clusters, and normally heal within 7 to 10 days. What causes mouth ulcers?Major aphthous mouth ulcers occur in about 1 in 10 cases. They tend to be 10 mm or larger across. Usually only one or two appear at a time. Each ulcer lasts from two weeks to several months but will heal leaving a scar. They can be very painful and eating may become difficult.

Iglu Sugar Free Pastilles contain a small amount of a sugar substitute called sorbitol. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to ingredients of this sort, discuss this with your doctor before taking this medicine. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTSIf a mouth ulcer is causing you pain or discomfort, speak to your pharmacist. They may be able to recommend a protective paste or a painkilling gel to ease your discomfort. These commonly create a barrier over the ulcer to allow it to heal and aim to reduce pain and inflammation while preventing infection. Canker sores (aphthous ulcers). These are the most common type of mouth ulcers. Healthcare providers aren’t exactly sure what causes them or why some people get them more than others do. Causes include minor trauma (like biting your cheek), acidic foods and even stress. Canker sores are usually white or yellow with red around the edges. Some people confuse canker sores with cold sores (fever blisters), but they’re very different. A canker sore appears inside your mouth. A cold sore forms outside your mouth, usually on your lips. Canker sores aren’t contagious, but cold sores are. How do you know if your mouth ulcer is bad? Mouth ulcers most frequently appear when the lining of the mouth (the mucous membrane) is damaged and fails to heal properly. These are called 'traumatic ulcers'. Common causes include:

If you are treating mouth ulcers caused by rubbing from false teeth/dentures etc, avoid using Iglu at the same time (e.g. use the gel at night or when not wearing dentures).
