Description

This is an ingenious and compelling story and like the age-old tales that are its inspiration, pitches love, generosity and forgiveness against human cruelty. Characters are very easy to relate to: middle sister and heroine, Betty, is the planner and natural leader of the siblings; flirtacious Fliss is the eldest and testing out her growing allure; and youngest sister, Charlie, is the collector of creatures and swiper of food. I’ve just finished The Rollercoaster Boy by Lisa Thompson which was brilliant, and I’m currently reading the not-yet-published A Flash of Fireflies by Aisha Bushby.

But after stumbling upon a mysterious prisoner who claims to be able to help them, they find themselves in great danger.

Every single one of her novels has had exactly the right amount of magic, character names, adventure, and imagination that I could ever want in a story.

In a modern fairy tale of witches, sorcery and exciting escapades, the Widdershins sisters use their cunning and magic in a good v evil adventure. One in three of all books sold is a children's book yet children's books only get 4% of review space in the media. There’s such a strange dynamic between siblings – you can be at each others’ throats one minute and leaping to each others’ defence the next. When breaking the curse becomes a matter of life or death, the three girls will have to work together – despite their sometimes spiky relationships – and at least they have a pinch of magic to help.A gripping, atmospheric tale of sorcery, secrets and sisterhood, infused with the titular pinch of magic. Girls who like Betty’s earthy resourcefulness, may also like Tiffany Aching in The Wee Free Man trilogy by Pratchett. It was absolutely thrilling - I felt as though I was in the story going on the adventures with the three sisters.

The story uses lots of dialogue in simple structures so share reading could be adult support on the descriptive passages with the younger reader taking one character’s words. Obviously its aimed at children but as an adult, I really enjoyed it still and I think it could be enjoyed by any age. I also particularly liked the chapters dedicated to Sorcha's story and the clever way it was interwoven into the current storyline that made it feel more like a magical fairytale. I understand I can change my preference through my account settings or unsubscribe directly from any marketing communications at any time. Bursting with humour, energy and plenty of heart, this entertaining tale is guaranteed to get readers in the festive mood.Betty is our more predominant heroine, though her sisters have a huge presence too, but Betty’s character is so determined and funny, she drives this story forward. At first I wasn't really seeing what the hype was all about, but the more we got into the story, the more I really enjoyed it! Throw in wronged witches, a pipe-smoking, whiskey-drinking grandmother and a prison break, and you have a fantastic quest story. I didn’t expect to get so caught up in it, but every single time I picked up this book I just sped through the pages, completely wrapped up in what happened.
