DOI: 10.1016/j.mpmed.2013.05.001 People with mild acne may find over-the-counter (OTC) products that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to be effective. These products usually produce any results in 4–8 weeks. Impetigo is a skin infection that forms red sores surrounded by red skin. The lesions fill with pus and become pimples, which then break open and crust over.Your provider will ask you questions about the lesion, like when you noticed the change in your skin, and whether or not the lesion itches. You can also expect them to inquire about any allergies or health conditions that you have, medications you are taking, and other pieces of your medical history. Some skin lesions may require further diagnostic tests. These can include blood tests, allergy tests, skin or wound swabs for microbiological investigations, and imaging techniques, such as an X-ray or CT scan. Finally, if the diagnosis is still uncertain or malignancy is suspected, a biopsy can be performed. Those who have had keloids in the past have a higher risk of developing them again. How do you diagnose skin lesions? Skin lesion removal can typically be done in your healthcare provider’s office, although in some cases it may need to be removed by a surgeon. The lesion and surrounding skin will likely be numbed with a local anesthetic before the removal. Most skin lesions are benign (harmless) and don’t need to be removed unless for cosmetic reasons. Your healthcare provider may recommend having the lesion removed if it is causing you discomfort or if there is any doubt that it could be cancerous.

These lesions usually go away on their own — and popping or bursting them increases the risk of infection.Cancer can cause skin lesions through the spreading of malignant cells to the skin or, more commonly, as a result of paraneoplastic syndromes, which are distant clinical manifestations triggered by an internal malignancy. Examples of cutaneous paraneoplastic syndromes include dermatomyositis (which causes skin rashes and muscle weakness) and pyoderma gangrenosum (which is a rapidly enlarging, painful ulcer). Other paraneoplastic conditions that involve the skin include Sweet’s syndrome, which causes skin lesions along with sudden onset fever, and the Leser–Trélat sign, which includes the presence of multiple seborrheic keratoses.
