Description

The Tamdhu 12 Years is the distillery’s current entry-level offering. Like the older Tamdhu 15 Years ( which I quite enjoyed) it matured entirely in sherry casks. Tamdhu 12 Years (43%, OB, 2020) The Tamdhu 12 is a nice smooth single malt to end the day with that embodies the classic traits of a sherry cask whisky.

The nose of the Sherry Oak 12 offers rich vanilla notes, complemented by subtle hints of dried fruit and oak. While it may not be the most complex or memorable whisky, the Tamdhu 12 is undoubtedly a step above your average 12-year-old Scotch and reasonably priced.

Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). Derived from the lusciously sweet and smooth Spanish Oloroso wine, its essence is notably evident in this single malt. It’s slightly sweet but not too heavy or cloying and delivers just the right amount of intensity to make for a fully satisfying experience.

The colour is very deep gold with a hint of amber. The nose has an immediate rich, sweet and robust feel to it with aromas of brown sugar, sultana and oat biscuits evident. Then come further aromas of caramel and butterscotch. These are underpinned by some candied orange peel and hints of hazelnut praline and juicy tropical fruits. Here, I’ve immersed myself in the art of crafting Mezcal, gaining a newfound appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into distilling this ancient spirit. On the nose: Alcohol burn initially, but it calmed down with time, giving butterscotch, cloves, dried fruits, ginger and vanilla.

Built by a group of blenders headed by William Grant, it was designed by famous distillery designer Charles Doig and eventually completed in 1897. A year later it was described by Alfred Barnard as “perhaps the most efficient and designed distillery of its era.” As much as it was a marvel of its time, Tamdhu’s history is not without hardship. For instance, it was closed for nearly two decades and only re-opened shortly after World War II.

Nose: Notes of orange zest and dark caramel, as well as a touch of cherry candy cane and clementine. Just a whisper of damp oak, accompanied by cocoa powder. Quite lovely indeed. My journey into the world of spirits began as a pub owner, where I cultivated memorable experiences for patrons and nurtured a deep appreciation for fine liquors. All in all, it was a good tasting, featuring delicious whisky, from a likeable distillery that seems to care about producing quality spirit, as well as looking after its local community and environment.
