Or rather, she treats tiny little things as if they were international catastrophes and international catastrophes as if they were tiny little things. Armed with a key and new knowledge about his parents' past, Nik sets out to unlock the secrets that his mother has been holding onto his whole life. Laika, the youngest, retreats into a contactless digital life, designing the trading algorithms that will ultimately prove his downfall in a condo near Wall Street. Read more about the condition Very Good: A book that has been read and does not look new, but is in excellent condition.

The plot remains very much the same; Knight has taken few liberties, but has recast the beloved characters and story in a modern mould. What it lacks in original storytelling, Darling more than makes up for in atmosphere and fresh jokes. As crazy as things get, there are poignant moments scattered throughout which remind us that love is sometimes not what we imagined, but it can also come when we least expect it. Even so, this is a gorgeously bittersweet portrait of growing up, where happiness is only ever fleeting. All the old faces are there, ripe to take on the modern world; Franny’s mother The Bolter fits surprisingly well into the 21 st century, as does Lord Merlin, who is now an avant-garde fashion designer, and who was before his time in the original in any case.

I thought the original might be coming out of copyright next year, when it’s 50 years since Nancy died, but apparently it’s 70 years after her death when it expires so it’s not for that reason.I came across at least three sentences which made me stumble, because there are mistakes in them which should have been sorted out. I actually snorted with laughter in several bits of it - particularly when Uncle Matthew and Davey get obsessed with Instagram. Just the thing for a rainy day or a long drive to lift the spirits and make all right with the world.
