Although, all of these are in 12 ml pots, unlike the actual texture paints and washes which are now 24ml. The remaining three missions continue in a fairly similar vein, with certain concepts being explained in good, clear terms, and others feeling a little murky. There’s nothing like the feeling you get when you’ve completed your first army and are ready to play, and now’s there’s an ever-expanding, and extremely supportive, community you can be a part of. Printed on glossy paper, the gaming mat that comes with the Kill Team Starter Set won’t have the longevity of one of the gaming board that are occasionally released in these kinds of boxes. In place of a Primaris Lieutenant and a Royal Warden, you get a Primaris Captain and a Necron Overlord, both representing senior ranks within their Faction.

The first mission has the Space Marine player using 3 Intercessors and the Necron player using 5 Warriors and simply talks the players through using movement and shooting. Make sure to set aside one of your models for a test paint, so you can change things up if you decide there’s a colour you hate. We’ll be back later in the week with a more detailed look at the awesome new terrain included in the Command Edition, but until then, head on over to the Warhammer 40,000 Facebook page and let us know which Starter Set(s) you’ll be picking up. It was only a couple of weeks back week in our Warhammer Indomitus Review that I said, “I can’t imagine that there won’t be some kind of starter box on the shelves once Indomitus has sold out”!

I Primed the Lieutenant with The Army Painter’s Wolf Grey Spray (head not being used in final assembly). One thing that we both found a bit of a pain is that there are no wound tokens or trackers included in the set. The Command Manual features the same information, assembly guides, and missions as the Elite Edition. The first thing you need to think about before you start painting your Warhammer army is choosing a colour scheme.

Finally, the Command Edition includes all the models from the Elite Edition, some industrial wasteland plastic terrain (think Mad Max in space), and a softback rulebook which includes all the Warhammer 40,000 core rules. If you’ve seen tabletop battles taking place at your local gaming café the idea of a filling a sticker album probably seems a lot easier than creating your own Warhammer army from scratch, but that’s not necessarily the case.

With the new starter sets on their way soon, Indomitus can officially pass the torch to its successors.

Are you considering picking one up to help fill the gaps in your own collection or maybe to fill out some squads? As it’s not been billed as a limited release, we anticipate that the Kill Team Starter Set should be available for quite some time, just like the Warhammer 40,000 Recruit, Elite and Command Edition Starter Sets and the Age of Sigmar Warrior, Harbinger and Extremis Starter Sets have been. but this time you get the Gauss Flayer Rifle Only (there’s no Gauss Reaper option unlike in the main set). Unlike the assault marines, the Necron Warriors offer a bit more customization when it comes to weapon loadouts. There are some moments of clarity and brilliance – Shoot and Fight, for example – but a concerningly large portion of the book will leave a lot of newcomers to the game with more questions than answers.
