Description

The Whip is a striking tale. Author Karen Kondazian created an epic. My heart soared and tore to pieces. Amazing how visually stimulating the audible presentation of a book can be, especially a book as evocative and superbly written as The Whip by Karen Kondazian when professionally narrated by the skillful and impressive Robin Weigert. Both Ms. Kondazian and Ms. Weigert excel magnificently at bringing into vivid presence the historical reality of a truly amazing woman. A great story– strong, colorful, relevant and exciting… I look forward to continuing my connection to this wonderful novel, and above all, the fascinating character of Charley Parkhurst. I read the entire book in three days. I saw the movie all the way through it. MPs who have lost the whip may late have it restored. Of the 21 Conservative MPs who had the whip removed in September 2019, 10 had the whip restored the following month. How common is it for MPs to disobey a three-line whip? stars. From the moment I started Whip I could not put it down. I could see Karen’s depth of research that she put into the development of her character. Truly a magnificent novel. I look forward to seeing the Whip as a film.

Charley Parkhurst makes for a compelling main character. The Whip is very well researched (I loved all the historical tid-bits about piano legs, cat-hauling, and the stagecoach business itself), and Kondazian’s novel unfolds cinematically; you can almost feel the sun’s rays and smell the horse sweat. A truly fascinating novel of one woman’s determination and grit in the heart of the Old West. stars, but only because I'm so intrigued by the person Charley Parkhurst. When I first heard about this book and of Charley Parkhurst, I couldn't wait to read it, and I had high expectations. I love historical fiction centered around someone who really existed (especially if there's an afterword explaining what is truth and what is fiction), but is not well-known, and I was looking forward to learning all about Charley Parkhurst's life. This was a sad tale. It shows the thin line between love and hate. It broke my heart to read the reason she headed west. And things didn’t get any easier for her once she “became a man.” It is this secret, its implications and its complications that Karen Kondazian speculates on in her fictional book “The Whip.” In doing so, she humanizes a larger-than-life woman, who concealed her gender, embraced one of the most dangerous professions of the west and became the first woman to vote in the United States. If you like stories about individuals who choose to chart their own destinies this is the book for you. Defying a three-line whip is considered extremely serious and can lead to the whip being removed from the MP in question. What does it mean to have the whip removed?

Bellingham, late governour of Boston in New-England, for him to read and consider Interesting fictional account of Charlotte “Charley” Parkhurst (1812-1879) who spent much of her adult life posing as a man in California driving for Wells Fargo. Wish there was more factual information on her life. Good, fast read.

In addition, whips organise ‘pairing’ arrangements, which allow MPs to be absent from a vote by matching them with an absent opposition MP, thereby effectively ‘cancelling out’ each other’s vote. How do whips keep their party in line? Riveting and action propelled. This researched work flows naturally, incorporating historical detail without detracting from the story. True-to-life description and a meticulous depiction of Parkhurst bring this gritty period to a degree of vividness rarely seen. The cinematic style utilizes all the senses; the world in which she survived unimaginable tragedy can be felt as well as seen in the mind’s eye. Witty dialogue, along with an intentional focus on reality, as opposed to excessive dramatization of the Wild West, make this book appropriate for an academic environment, not just mainstream entertainment.I enjoyed reading this book so much that I started it a third time since purchasing it in January of 2012. I am wildly excited for Karen Kondazian's next book. A violent surfacing of adolescence (which has little in common with Tarkington's earlier, broadly comic, Seventeen) has a compulsive impact. After some consideration, I've settled on a single word to summarize The Whip: SUFFERING. This isn't necessarily a negative. Suffering in The Whip is primarily meant to affirm the justice of deserved rewards -- karma, you might say. The ultimate triumph is love -- i.e., how Emma has suffered so much shit that it's a miracle she has the will to feel love toward another person. The river or theme that runs through The Whip is the question regarding forgiveness… What would you do if someone destroyed the person you love most? Could you forgive them..? And if not, what would you do? I bought the book because of the subject matter, thinking this would be a "historical fiction" with more of an emphasis on the "historical" then the "fiction." The author does make it clear she took liberties with the story (started out with the idea of the character, kept some important events from hir life, but made up a bunch of it), so I don't feel "deceived." This is an enjoyable read, a good story with interesting characters, but I don't know how much of it is true to Parkhurst's life. However, now that I know about Charley Parkhurst, I'm definitely going to be researching hir to find out what was true, what was artistic license -- mainly, whether Parkhurt was a cis woman living as a man because women in those times had so few options for survival, or whether Parkhurst was actually a trans man (which is what I originally thought when I read the description).

Charley could sense Edmunds not only made love to Charlotte, but to Charley as well. The vision of Charley on the driver’s box, sweaty, dirty, whipping the six-team, powerful and brave as any man. She imagined it excited him to feel Charley beneath him or on top. As it excited her . . . the freedom to be a man and a woman in the same body – at the same time. Condition: Good. Very well-written, this has the feel of something like Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven – a raw, realistic, powerful western that stays well away from the spaghetti roots. THE WHIP, set in the uncompromising Old West is inspired by the true story of an extraordinary woman, Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst who lived most of her tumultuous life as a male stagecoach driver. I just finished reading “The Whip” and I have to tell you how much I absolutely loved your book. My wife read it too and has recommended it to her book club. Other than Larry McMurtry, Brian Garfield and a few others, I rarely read fiction. I am a history buff. It’s a curse. But “The Whip” had me from the start. I believe what I liked best is your books honesty. It is not necessarily a western; it’s about a person that happened to exist in that time period. It’s about feelings, emotions, anger, confusion, and even hatred; But mostly about forgiveness. I love your style of writing. For me it holds a simple rhythm that makes it a friendly read. Thank you so much for Charley and sharing her wonderful adventure. The Whip is inspired by the true story of a woman, Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst (1812-1879) who lived most of her extraordinary life as a man in the old west.
