Somewhere between the ocean waves and the lighthouse surprises, there’s home for me I felt while reading this short middle grade book. Julia and the Shark is deep, beautiful and true. The art shines and the writing soars – a classic from cover to cover’ Eoin Colfer

A mesmerising story of a family, a lighthouse and a quest to find the elusive Greenland shark written by Kiran Millwood Hargrave and illustrated by Tom de Freston. ( Publisher:Hachette Children’s Group). Award-winning Kiran Millwood Hargrave tells a story of great power and significance with incredible sensitivity and writerly skill. By drawing on both, Julia and the Shark is magical, imaginative and mysterious while also dealing with complex emotions and situations. Five years before this volume’s start, Mila’s father abandoned her family as Eldbjørn Forest and its surrounding lands, including their family home, was plunged into a never-ending winter that Continue reading » This was a gorgeous story of mental health, friendship, family and realising for the first time that your parents aren’t as unbreakable as you once thought. Writing about topics such as mental health and depression for children is not easy feat but I think Kiran Millwood Hargrave executed it with grace, sensitivity and a brilliant balance of honesty and whimsy.

Furthermore, Tom de Freston's illustrations perfectly capture the atmosphere of the story and writing style. Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments The best parts for me would be the little facts and the amazing descriptions about what it is like to be out there exploring the oceans, the wildlife and that too with your family. It felt so good and I really wish it was me with my family there.

It's clear early on that Julia's fun, energetic scientist mother with an obsession with finding a shark is actually mentally ill, and I correctly guessed bipolar early on. The story is just that - Julia's life in the new village and lighthouse her family are staying in, as her mum sinks further into despair as she tries to find the elusive shark.Julia and her parents have just left their home to spend the summer at a remote lighthouse, far away from anyone they know. Whilst Julia’s Dad is there for work, her marine biologist Mum is there for another reason – she wants to study the elusive Greenland shark, said to live in the waters nearby. Tom de Freston’s stunning illustrations perfectly complement the poetry of Kiran Millwood Hargrave’s story Cressida Cowell What a gorgeous book - calm, funny, heartfelt, wise, full of the quiet and force of the sea - Ross Montgomery, author of The Midnight Guardians This little gem is a book about mental issues, mental health, friendship, bullying, adventure, love and caring for the environment. And of course about cats: Noodle is a cat who has her rightful place in the family and the story. Julia and her parents take off from their home in Cornwall to live in a lighthouse on Shetland. Her father is working on fixing the lighthouse light while her mother is determined to explore the wide and very cold seas to find an elusive Greenland shark. While Julia’s father is practical, methodical and minds about numbers, Julia’s mother minds about words and about the scientific research she is so passionate about. While Julia begins to make friends with the few other children around, her mother becomes more and more absorbed in the search for the shark. Nothing will stop her - not the danger and not the cost. Julia wants to help her mother to fulfil her dream but she also knows that there is something irrational, uncontrolled and deadly dangerous about what she is planning to do. The themes around mental health were really well written and handled with so much respect and care. There are so many quotable lines right from the first chapter. I was itching to spread some Kiran Millwood Hargrave magic lines but I was reading an advance reader copy so had to control myself. A beautiful, lyrical, uplifting story about a mother, a daughter, and love – with timely themes of the importance of science and the environment. I cried, I rejoiced and I felt all the feels.
