Straight out of their boxes, the Ultra Towers sounded full, smooth, and robust -- in a word, superb. I then gave them a few days of break-in (facing each other, wired out of phase, and reproducing FM interstation noise), but noticed little change other than, perhaps, a slightly more open top end. With 80% of the sound coming in mids, the drivers unveils the core of the speaker’s timbre. Augmenting high-frequency performance, the Ultra Tower speaker’s aluminum dome tweeter is incredibly transparent and precise. The SVS Prime Pinnacles are an example of superb engineering and dedication to excellent sound, and we think they are as close to essential as a pair of loudspeakers get. Internally, each cabinet employs two separate sealed midrange enclosures to optimize performance and minimize interaction between drivers. Positioning of the tweeter between the two mid-range drivers in separate enclosures, and the unique 3.5-way crossover design make high frequency output highly resistant to ceiling and floor boundary reflections so the Ultra Tower can project a pinpoint accurate portrayal of the near field response, even when a listener is sitting far away. Beyond that, you also get a set of metal feet that screw into the bottom of each speaker. We have hardwood floors, and we were more than happy to keep the default rubber feet attached. We didn’t feel we had a problem with isolation, so swapping out the feet isn’t something you necessarily need to do. It’s good to have the option, though.
