Wooden Leg: At some point during his career, Alastor lost one of his legs and therefore relied on a wooden leg to replace his lost one. [4] Bartemius Crouch Junior was able to cast all three Unforgivable Curses with this wand while impersonating Moody via Polyjuice Potion during the 1994–1995 school year at Hogwarts. When Moody was killed by Lord Voldemort, Arthur was very sad.But before he could, Albus, accompanied by Minerva and Severus, fired a Stunning Spell at him, having realised that he was not Alastor when he removed Harry from his sight — his one slip-up. After the Polyjuice Potion wore off, Barty confessed everything to Albus under the influence of Veritaserum, a strong truth potion. According to Sirius, Moody never killed anyone if he could help it during the first wizarding war, always bringing people in alive where possible. Alastor Moody was tough, brave and a consummate survivor, as well as an excellent fighter. He had a gruff, surly disposition. Having encountered many dangerous experiences throughout his career, he was hyper-paranoid and thought of by many as being delusional. Casting spells while prone would likely take quite a bit of practice to get accustomed to. The body position on Moody's broom is much more akin to a natural walking position, so would present much less of a learning curve, and would therefor offer less of a combat disadvantage for a rider who was relatively inexperienced than the traditional prone setup.
