of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars The Case of the Left-Handed Lady by Nancy Springer I have of course seen the promos for the Netflix film Enola Holmes, though I haven’t actually seen it yet. I knew it was based on a series of YA books, but I’d never read them either. So when I saw that there was a graphic novel adaptation on NetGalley, I thought it would a fun introduction. Besides, I like the art. a b Bhattacharya, Suryasarathi (2020-09-23). "Enola Holmes author Nancy Springer on her popular mystery series and the Netflix adaptation". Firstpost . Retrieved 2020-09-27. But with regards to the book itself, while I loved the beautiful illustrations, there was just...really...not much thought put into the details of this book. I mean, they got some things right...but in all seriousness it's not really something I'd read again.

Enola is strongwilled, spontaneous and as clever as her brother. Her exploits were fun to follow and I think younger audiences will enjoy solving cases with her. Ultimately, I thought this was a beautifully-illustrated graphic novel that serves as a nice introduction to the series, if not a perfect substitute. Determined to find the missing porter, Enola travels to the rough part of London where the boys live and starts searching Aldgate Pump area for the missing boy. When she finds the missing buttons - but not the boy - she decides that drastic action is essential if she's to save the missing boy. The mystery in this one is Enola trying to find a missing young lady who may or may not have run away with an unsuitable lover. The mysteries were not even very interesting. What was more amusing and entertaining was the way in which the main characters constantly skirted around each other. Enola hiding from her brothers was sad but her success in it made it fun to see too. Whereas her mother hiding from her was downright depressing and loomed large over the plot. And by the end I was as tired of seeing Enola think about her mother as Enola was herself. I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers. We received an ARC from @andrewsmcmeel via @netgalley of Serena Blasco’s #EnolaHolmesTheGraphicNovels Book One in exchange for an honest review. Still on the run from her brothers, Enola finds a new case, this one about a young Lady of the high society, presumably on the run with a lover. But nothing is as it seems, and with a little help from her still missing mother, Enola manages to avoid traps from her brothers as well as solving the new mystery she's in. Wadley, Laura (2006). Now, a digression. YA historical novels from the early 2000s appear to be rather full of a realistic darkness – at least that is the pattern I am noticing! There’s more of an emphasis on the lead’s coming-of-age.

Enola shows herself to be an intelligent, rational, resourceful, and brave protagonist. Readers will look forward to hearing this heroine’s unique voice again.”— Publishers Weekly, starred review I’ve not read any of the original books or seen the Netflix show, but I’ve heard about them and was excited to read this graphic novel. Had God decreed that three quarters of the populace shall live and labour in bone-skewing mind-stunting poverty, while a favoured few shall occupy their days by having their servants assist them in five changes of clothing? a b c d Montz, Amy L. (2019). "Unbinding the Victorian Girl: Corsetry and Neo-Victorian Young Adult Literature". Children's Literature Association Quarterly. 44 (1): 88–101. doi: 10.1353/chq.2019.0005.

La historia es muy corta y sencilla, Cyber Monday muchos descuentos un libro a un precio muy bajo, la adaptación de Netflix y mi repentino amor a todo lo relacionado con esa época. I haven’t met Enola’s mother yet but I love her already. She’s a suffragist who’s schooled her daughter in activities that will be useful, as opposed to those that will facilitate her transformation into a houseplant.

Springer has also stated that Enola is partially based on her own life. She herself is much younger than her two older brothers, who left for college before she reached puberty. Springer, too, had an artist for a mother, who was talented with painting watercolor flowers. Due to cancer, menopause and an early-onset form of dementia, Springer's mother spent less time with her after she turned 14 years old. Further, like Enola, Springer "was a scrawny, bony, gawky tree-climbing tomboy with hair that needed to be washed" and was "solitary and bookish." [2] One of the first interesting things about this book is its title. Now most of us are naturally right-handed, but there are many people who are naturally left handed. You may know someone who prefers using their left hand. In fact, there are many celebrities who are left-handed and it is quite an accepted phenomena these days. But it was not so even a few decades ago. As right hand is considered the ‘good’ hand, the hand preferred during religious ceremonies and so on, a lot of left-handed children also were punished and it was common practice to try and get them to change to be right handed. This book highlights that this custom must have been common around the world, as the author shows us through Enola’s thoughts what a typical left-handed child would go through when growing up in England of late nineteenth century: All these encounters with her brothers while she was in disguise were making me incredibly excited. Speaking of, I don't know if these are considered MG or YA, but I think they would work for either group. The length is just right for younger middle-grade readers.Enola shows herself to be an intelligent, rational, resourceful, and brave protagonist.
