As the world is losing almost 6 million hectares of forest each year to deforestation, more eco-conscious consumers are reconsidering their shopping choices when it comes to pulp and paper-derived products. So, in a market dominated by virgin wood fibre, we think bamboo is a good ethical option. There are risks, however, as discussed above, so it’s important to hold bamboo toilet paper companies to account for their sourcing and production. On top of that, eco friendly toilet roll tends to be unbleached and chlorine-free. This is because bleaching paper to make it look whiter ends up releasing unnecessary chemicals into our freshwater, contributing to waterway pollution.

According to Scientific American, “switching to bathroom bidets could save some 15 million trees.” High-end bidets that are water-efficient only use about an eighth of a gallon per visit. Bum gun / bidet attachment The aim of its certification scheme is to confirm that forests are managed in ways that preserve biodiversity and benefit the lives of local people while remaining economically viable. The FSC has been subject to criticism over many years for the failings of its certification system, with multiple scandals involving certified wood coming from illegal or harmful sources. Brands which say they are chlorine-free are Bazoo, Ecoleaf (Suma), Feel Good, Greencane , Honest Supplies, and Serious Tissues. For recycling to be economically viable, waste paper needs to be turned into high-value products as much as possible. Toilet paper is a higher-value product than cardboard (according to information provided by Green Stationery Company). Recycled toilet paper by the big companies is decreasing W e think they look cute. They work wonders as an online product because they’re eye-catching and shareable. We know this because our customers are constantly sharing snaps of their deliveries on social media, and gifting rolls to friends. This is really important because the more people share what we’re doing, the more we can grow and the more toilet-building and sanitation projects we can fund! (plus, it’s cheaper than paid advertising)“.If you have room in your bathroom and are considering a remodel, invest in a bidet and give your tush a little luxury. The bidet is much more sustainable than toilet tissue, and more hygienic too. Yes, you’ll use more water per bathroom visit, but far less water and fewer resources overall.

A small amount of paper is produced using alternatives to chlorine such as oxygen, ozone, and hydrogen peroxide. This process is known as Totally Chlorine Free (TCF). Across the world, forests are being cut down to feed this market, with ruinous consequences for the environment, people, and wildlife.

Is there an ethical toilet paper?

I know what you’re thinking here – what’s not to love Wendy?I do deeply admire the charitable giving nature of Who Gives A Crap. And of course, I love the plastic-free element. What doesn’t sit well with me is the fact that each roll of toilet paper is individually wrapped. That’s a lot of unnecessary paper from one box of 48 toilet rolls. Bleaching is used in the paper-making process to break down lignin – the substance that gives trees and bamboo their stiffness – and to whiten the end product. The pulp and paper industry as a whole is the largest global consumer of virgin wood, using about 35% of harvested trees for the manufacture of paper. It is a major contributor to deforestation and thereby to biodiversity loss, soil erosion, species extinction, and ecosystem disruptions. Made in Europe but free to ship to the US, Uranus Wiper is a 4-ply toilet tissue. It is 100% recycled, comprising 75% post-consumer waste paper and 25% pre-consumer waste paper. The paper is BPA-free, and made without chlorine or inks. The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) tree logo is a familiar sight on wood and paper products and many toilet paper brands carry it (see table further down). But what does it mean?

I had a feeling there was probably more to it, then I found the answer in the Who Gives A Crap FAQ: The pricing is fairly standard at just under 70p per roll so offers consumers decent value for money.Who Gives A Crap says that the individual wrappers are for both hygiene reasons and to keep the paper moisture-free.However, if Greencane can manage it then it feels a bit of a hollow excuse. Is There More To It?

Each roll boasts 336 sheets measuring 4.2 inches by 3.6 inches. The paper is septic-safe, virtually lint-free, and is soft and absorbent with perforations and embossed sheets. No chlorine and other toxic chemicals have been used throughout the production process. This is harder, and sometimes impossible, to figure out when you’re in a shop looking at the shelves. This is why it’s a good idea to already have the eco toilet paper brands in mind you want to buy from. Each roll contains 200 sheets which is more than some of the products on this list but they are only 2 ply which makes them a little less stronger.Recycled toilet paper is the cheapest and most commonly available alternative to virgin pulp toilet paper. Switching to a more environmentally friendly toilet paper is such a simple swap that anyone can make. By using recycled toilet paper or bamboo toilet paper you can drastically reduce the amount of emissions and waste associated with the typical toilet roll found in supermarkets around the UK. Greencane isn’t the softest toilet paper I’ve ever tried. It’s no 3-ply quilted luxury loo roll. But then again, it’s not scratchy or worse, like tracing paper. It simply does the job perfectly fine, and I’ve had no complaints from any of my family. What’s it made of? Alternative fibres such as bamboo play an important role in shifting paper sourcing away from virgin wood forests.
