White and red wines performed well in this glass, although we observed that its narrow profile makes swirling a little difficult, so it's not as ideal for full aeration as some of the larger options we tried. That said, despite being a universal glass, it's also an excellent option for sparkling wine. The thinner orientation offers great visuals of the bubbles, and the smaller surface area means that not too much carbonation is lost as the wine sits. For any wine you plan to pour for friends at home—especially bubbly!—the Verbelle set is a great option.

It's All in the Details

Also highly recommended by New York Times' Wirecutter in their latest test for the Best Wine Glass: Opening Diameter: This trait really affects the aroma presence of wine. In the video, I had some quips about smaller diameter openings for red wines because of how much it shoveled the aromas into my nose (the burn!). 2.25 inches was tight for reds but ideal for whites. 2.5 inches was about right (both Zalto and Gabriel-Glass were around 2.5). Finally, my “old standby” restaurant series Riedel Vinum Extreme Cabernets have a diameter of 2.75. The first thing that anyone will notice about this glass is the unique and fascinating shape—but there's much more to the Josephinenhütte Josephine No. 3 Red Wine Glass than what first meets the eye. A visually striking glass crafted from lead-free crystal, it's also an ideal vessel for your next glass of robust red wine. While it might be a bit pricey compared to other options, it's a statement piece—and also happens to be a very practical red wine vessel. Zalto recommends using the dishwasher for cleaning its glassware. However, in our experience, there are a few extra steps you’ll want to consider when using the dishwasher. Consider doing the following:

Top points were awarded for its aesthetics, and we liked the fact that the base is the same width as the bell, which is always a sound design choice in a quality wine glass. We also appreciated the way the glass accentuated the olfactory notes of white wine in particular, with its more narrow design probably more suited for pretty whites than for robust reds. While this isn't a cheap glass, it will surely be a hit with anyone whose wine habits skew toward the white side of things.

The Story

Zalto’s Denk’Art Universal Glass is undeniably among the best of the best, and cult-favorite Turkish glassware brand NUDE also has some very appealing and versatile options for reds and whites at a fraction of Zalto’s price tag, though their selection can be a bit overwhelming at times. While these brands have both been on my wish list for quite some time, I decided to dig a bit deeper to see what else was out there.

Red wines can be unyielding, their flavors and aromas wrapped up in layers of tannins that take hours to unfold, but a well-designed wine glass can be extremely helpful in speeding along that process. We found that the unique design of the Josephine No. 3 allows the wine to be swirled vigorously with very little risk of any splashing out. Additionally, the wide surface area aids in aeration, and the flowing tapered design effectively conducts all those newly-released aromatics up to the nose. This is a purpose-built vessel for the red wine lover who doesn't shy away from making a definitive visual statement. I also spoke with Paola Embry, CEO and wine director at the Wrigley Mansion in Phoenix, Arizona, who recommends the machine-made StandArt for casual everyday drinking, pointing out that this glass has a wonderfully fine rim despite coming in at less than half the cost of its mouth-blown counterpart, the Gold Edition. “Both glasses are as light as a feather, have a super thin lip, and a perfect size bowl,” she said. “One of the more important aspects of great glassware that I look for is the thinness of the rim.” There are five ounces in a standard pour of wine, which equates to five glass per 750-milliliter bottle. If you need to stretch a bottle to six glasses, try to only pour four ounces. I can endorse the way that the Gabriel Glass amplifies the wine’s bouquet and is brilliantly fine and light. It’s wafer thin and an absolute delight to use,” continues Bob Campbell MW, before offering a glimpse of how it performs in the personal, as opposed to professional, arena. “My wife, Marion, is a huge fan. She’s been nagging me to write a blog promoting Gabriel-Glas since we first tried them. I urge you to test drive one as soon as possible.”One day a lot of wine lovers conclude that they only really need one excellent wine glass. The different shapes and sizes make a big difference but wouldn’t you love to have just one that shows every wine in its best light? Then, at the top-end of wine glasses, there are many options. We loved Zalto and Gabriel-Glas, as we mentioned above, but could come up with reasons to love each of the glasses we tested. It has been a long time between shared drinks for a lot of us. I have not hosted a dinner since October 2019. I am keen to get out and share great food and great company. How about you?

Reduce clutter...and thereby breakage! Save space and save money at the same time because you no longer need a set of white wine glass and a set of Bordeaux or another set of Burgundy glass.

Many of the world's finest white wines are all about precision and elegance—and those also happen to be two key attributes of "The Perfect Wine Glass" from designer Richard Brendon and renowned wine critic Jancis Robinson. Featuring a tall, thin profile and crafted from gorgeous hand-blown crystal, this glass is an excellent vessel for most white wines. We appreciated its beadless rim and base, and we loved how dainty it felt in the hand. That said, we did find ourselves a little nervous about breaking it! With its timeless design and wide bowl, the glass is ideal for white or red wines (and sparkling too, for that matter), as the aesthetic presentation of the wine is attractive and the aromatics are rich and pleasing. We found that delicate aromatics opened up a bit more after swirling, allowing us to experience more of the wine characteristics. On sale now at SGD 220. Price stated is per set of 6 stems (comes in gift box of 6) and inclusive of FREE DELIVERY. Multi-Piece: Most glasses are made with multiple pieces. The high-end models are not, which is why they are so much more durable despite how fragile they look and feel. Still, there’s nothing wrong with being multi-piece, make sure they get the seams off. (You can feel the seam on the stem.)
