But the ensuing mermaid craze obviously didn’t come out of a vacuum; legends have been circulating for centuries about merpeople in one form or another, whether as sexually enchanting sirens luring sailors to their deaths or benevolent beings so fascinated by humans they become the ideal lovers. They’re much like vampires in the way that they provide endless potential to explore the fine line between the human and the alien, and they can even take it further by acting as metaphors for the vast, still unexplored regions of the ocean and nature itself. In the west of Scotland, Kate Macleod is captured from above, moving through a northern sea of chill turquoise, her tail rippling out behind her. The aerial shot is from the introduction to Miann na Maighdinn-mara and the point where the magic of the landscape makes you believe that the swimmer below could – possibly – be magical, too. SpongeBob attempts to use the Orb of Confusion to stop Man Ray. Given that he is not immune to the effects of the orb and Man Ray is, the Orb would have been useless, though SpongeBob likely didn't know of Man Ray's immunity. Other legends originated in Western and Eastern Europe, Byzantine, Greece, China, Korea, and more. In Korea, a country that’s surrounded by water on three sides, there are stories of mermaids with human features. For example, a story of a mayor saving four mermaids from a fisherman and an underwater kingdom known as Naranda.SpongeBob says that Man Ray is the greatest arch-nemesis of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy after the Dirty Bubble. Sirenomelia (also known as mermaid syndrome) is a rare birth defect that occurs during the third gestational week. The sufferers of this syndrome are characterized by the unusual fusing of the two legs – leaving them with what appears to be a mermaid tail. Unfortunately, because of the nature of this disease and the damage that is often found in the digestive and urinary tracts upon birth, many of these patients die within days or weeks of their birth. To date, there are only 4 known patients who survived past this time frame. A Comforting Thought Deep dive: Suzie Inman, who organises the Porthleven Mermaid Day. Photograph: Leon Foggitt/The Observer In addition to these goddesses, many of the minor sea goddesses inherited her characteristics as well. A great example of this can be found with the nereids and sea nymphs. They are often depicted as having both legs and fish tails depending on where they were located. The selkies of Icelandic mythology are also known to have similar stories, though instead of a fish tail they are thought to have complete seal skins. Mermaids Around the World Mermaiding’s popularity began with Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman, who starred in the 1911 film Siren of the Sea, where she was the first actor to swim in a tail (she is also credited with the invention of synchronised swimming and being the first high-profile woman to wear a modern one-piece bathing suit).

Melusine’s mother was named Pressyne – she was a beautiful fey who agreed to marry King Elynas when he happened upon her in the woods one day. He asked her to marry him and she agreed. For many years he upheld this promise, but eventually he broke the oath and Pressyne left with their three children. When Melusine turned 15, she asked why they had not been raised with their father and was told about his transgression. She sought revenge against him, but was punished by her mother for disrespecting King Elynas. She was cursed to change into a fish with two tails (or in other versions a serpent) from the waist down on Saturdays.

We have always created creatures and monsters in our minds,” says Marina Warner, a historian and mythographer. “Mermaids are an inviting and seductive example of that. It’s about seeing ourselves as not entirely human… there is a deep yearning in our mechanised, technologised world to become something organic, of the sea as well as of the land. It’s a pleasurable place to be, suspended between belief and disbelief.” Puberty arrives with a roar in the Swiss film Blue My Mind, as the teenage Mia (Luna Wedler) discovers acne is the least of her problems shortly after getting her first period. Suddenly, fitting in with the cool kids takes short shrift to her cravings for saltwater and fish, her toes growing together, her belly button disappearing, and strange bruising on her legs that eventually transforms them into a tail. There’s a strong feminine energy to it and there’s also the connection with folklore and history,” she says. Like Suzie Inman, Ashleigh’s grandfather was also a fisherman, as were several of her other relatives. “Saltwater runs in my blood,” she says. “I call myself the Moray Firth Mermaid because it’s where my ancestors have always been. There’s a sense of belonging with the sea. It’s part of our culture and our heritage as Highlanders.” It is the fact that stories about these mythical sea creatures exist independently around the world that many people still believe that mermaids existed or did at one time.Li Ban and her lap dog lived in an underwater chamber for one year after the great flood. After this time had passed, she was transformed into a mermaid – half maiden and half salmon. Her lap dog was transformed into an otter.
