It is confirmed in the book Stranger Things: Worlds Turned Upside Down that The Duffer Brothers took inspiration from The Body, along with the books Firestarter, The Dead Zone, Carrie, The Shining and It.It was wholly morbid at times and an intricate exploration into one’s own inner monsters and mortality itself.
