If you like cylinder vacuum cleaners and want the features that Shark usually has with its uprights, then this is the a great choice. Weight Buyers should know that we did notice a slight high-pitched whirring noise when it was running, and we found that our testing process depleted nearly half the battery, which was higher than most that we tested. Still, all in all, this vacuum/mop combo compares very well to the big brand names in both effectiveness and ease of use. Additional features like a self-cleaning mode and a HEPA filter, which captures and traps ultra-tiny dust particles (0.3 microns to be exact), are the icing on the cake. Another great wet and dry vacuum for pets is the DeWalt wet dry vac. It isn’t as specialized as the Draper for pet hair and mess cleanup, but it can handle the job. The Shark Anti Hair Wrap Upright Vacuum Cleaner XL with Powered Lift-Away & TruePet PZ1000UKT takes everything great about the company’s Lift-Away vacuums and super-sizes it. Here, there’s a wider floor head than normal and a huge 1.6-litre bin, so we could clean for longer without having to empty. Its incredible cleaning power and wide floor head let us cover a big area in a short amount of time, making this our best upright vacuum cleaner for large homes.

This vacuum has a 2-litre bin, which should prove sufficient for a couple of cleans at least. It comes away from the vacuum cleaner’s body, with a button to open the trapdoor at its bottom releasing the dirt collected into a bin. This door was a little stiff at first, so I recommend opening and closing it manually a few times before using the Respira. The Hoover H-Upright 300’s suction in AirWatts is185.9AW, which is lower than many other plug-in cleaners, which usually come in around 200+. However, it’s still more powerful than most cordless models on their maximum setting. It probably comes as no surprise that Charles would get a top place in a “Best of” vacuum review, but how many expected it to be a wet-dry vacuum? At least the reason that the Respira is so hard to move is because it has a lot of power. I measured it at 229AW, which puts it within reach of the Shark NZ850UKT. That power translates into decent performance: a solid sweep through our test mess, although a trace of dirt left behind towards the edge of the floor head. Pet hair removal was spot on, removing every trace of dirt. The only downside is that to switch from wet to dry requires a bit of a process by opening up the body and switching the filters around. It only takes less than a minute, but a toggle would have been preferred. An improved three-phase filtration system promises to keep the air clean and offers permanent formaldehyde destruction and five years of HEPA filter life.

Open the top of the bin and the central filter pulls out for easy cleaning. Plus, there’s a secondary filter on the underside of the bin that can be removed and washed. This new model has an updated version of Shark’s Anti Hair Wrap tech: in testing, both the soft brush roll and carpet brush came out completely clean. in-1 Vacuum and Wash] [2-in-1 Vacuum and Wash] The cutting-edge real-time water circulation technology effectively cleans hard floors while simultaneously vacuuming, sweeping, and washing them. Clean up spills, messes, filth, and dirt from all of your home's hard floors. Once you’ve finished cleaning, the bin lifts out of the cleaner, and you can flip open the bottom to empty dirt quite easily. There’s one filter here and another in the cleaner, both of which should be cleaned with water to maintain maximum suction. The size of the hose and nozzle doesn’t need to be quite as wide as what you would need in an industrial area, but you should think about what you will be vacuuming. A too narrow hose will limit you considerably when you do find yourself needing to clean up some larger debris.

A crevice tool is indispensable in your home. If you don’t have one with your wet vacuum you may find yourself missing one. Spills are not always in wide-open areas. A crevice tool can make sure you covered all of your ground. There’s no side brush on this model, with Dyson using an edge-to-edge brush for cleaning, and using edge-hugging sensors, so that the 360 Vis Nav will run down the side of rooms collecting dust. Another no-frills but useful wet dry vacuum for your home is the Karcher WD2, and like the Numatic Charles, gets the job done. With the 360 Vis Nav, Dyson is promising that the new robot vacuum cleaner has six times the suction of other robots, using a Hyperdium motor that spins at up to 110,000rpm. Raw power is one thing, but robot vacuum cleaners also need to be smart.

The takeaway

Air that flows through the filter and out of the vacuum is usually cleaner than many domestic vacuums permit since the dirt and dust get absorbed by the water. After a thorough cleaning of a workshop, the air may actually be cleaner than in your home! If there’s one problem with cylinder vacuum cleaners, it’s that they’re often bulky and messy to store. The Miele Boost CX1 is different. Some models use disposable pads that can simply be thrown away after use. Similarly, some shop vacs have a drainage plug at the bottom of the canister that lets you easily pour out any liquid contents. "If you have long-haired pets, you should consider in advance how you'll dispose of the dirty water containing clumps of wet pet hair," says Katie Berry, The Spruce's Cleaning Review Board member. "Ordinarily, you can dump the dirty water down the toilet, but with pet hair involved that's not a good practice." Suction Power It’s light enough to carry around with the dedicated handle on top, but there are no castors to help it roll. The included HEPA filter looks like it’s sturdy and made to last a long time. Just make sure to take it out before wet vacuuming jobs. One big difference between wet and dry vacuum cleaners and your standard models is that they can exceed the power limits set: the SE 33 draws 1400W, whereas a standard cleaner will be 750W or less. This translates into more raw power: we measured it at 406AW, which is double the power of many other models in this list.
