Description

If Glen Moray 12 is the single malt for sherry haters, Tamdhu 12 is the whisky for people who want their whisky to be filled with a ridiculous amount of sherry sweetness and ripe fruit flavor. Glenfiddich 12 Glenfiddich If you’re new to whisky then Glen Moray’s Elgin Classic is a great place to start, not least because it’s a bargain price and available just about everywhere you can buy whisky. The distillery is based in the city of Elgin, capital of the Speyside region, and the bottle that shares its name is typical of the grassy style of whiskies the region produces. Although Speyside isn’t known for smoky whiskies, there are a few distilleries that like to work with peated malts. One such is BenRiach whose core range includes 10 and 12 year old whiskies that are both peated and unpeated. This is an approachable single malt for people who aren’t too keen on sherry-finished whiskies. This is one is all rich oak and caramel. Glengoyne 12 Glengoyne The Balvenie is a much admired distillery, producing popular expressions that we think are at their best when served after dinner, with their Speyside flavours having a fruity pastry character to them. Like most distilleries they also like to mix things up a bit and have recently added whisky matured in French oak casks to its range. It’s one of those whiskies that I don’t hate, am glad I tried, but won’t be trying again anytime soon because I’m let down by it. There was nothing offensive about it and the aroma and palate both had some nice aspects to them, but they came across far too light and flighty, It’s like the diet version of a really good Speyside and leaves me wanting more, but never quite able to find the substance I want in this glass. This is definitely a whisky that needs a higher proof and maybe even another year or two in the barrel. The nose begins with hints of caramelized apple, ripe fruits, raisins, and butterscotch. The palate stars notes of sweet sherry, ripe berries, chocolate fudge, caramelized sugar, and rich oak. The last few sips are sweet, spicy, and highly memorable. The 12 year old brings together smoke and some classic Sherry-matured whisky flavours in perfect harmony. At first it’s the Sherry that takes centre stage, hitting the palate with sweet, oily orange flavours, but gradually the peat works its magic, charring those orange notes and introducing some deeper flavours of smoke, oak and nutty spice. It’s a sweet, creamy peaty Speyside delight. It’s flagship product, the Glen Moray 12, is an interesting little guy. It has so much potential and so many nice things going on that I find myself rooting for it and spending more time than I usually would hunting and searching for more. Hoping that there is some hidden depth to this whisky that I just didn’t taste the first, second, third or fourth time… but alas, that is not the case as you’ll see in the review below. Glen Moray 12 Review

Aesthetic experience: I actually think this bottle, label, and crest look old school and classy. The only thing I would change is the ABV up to 46%. Fancy trying a Speyside whisky straight from the barrel? Of course you do. In which case get your hands on a bottle of Aberlour A’Bunadh. That straight-from-the-barrel strength will be around 62% – it’s released in limited run batches so the strength will vary according to exactly which cask it came from. Be brave and have a little sip neat, then add water until it reaches your preferred taste. The nose swirls with aromas of sweet sherry, raisins, vanilla, and slight citrus. The sip reveals hints of sweet malts, vanilla beans, candied orange peels, and charred oak. The last sip is sweet and spicy with citrus and caramel. This single malt is a sherry fan’s dream. Matured in a combination of first-fill and refill Oloroso sherry butts for all twelve years of the maturation process, this expression is spicy, sweet, and highly sippable. A truly memorable whisky for fans of sherry-matured single malts. Complexity, Balance: I am impressed with both the complexity and balance at this age (and from this distillery). A top grassy Speysider. The balance of sour and sweet is very interesting to observe. The complexity is way more then the “other” Glen’s I can think of. And the balance of the sweet, sour, grassy, malty on the nose, tongue and finish were wonderful. The only thing really out of balance was where some floral notes - that didn’t surface in the nose or the finish - came out on the taste. These are often rich, sweet drams ideal for after dinner sipping. But it’s also known for some incredible easy going whiskies, often described as having ‘grassy’ flavours alongside citrus and orchard fruit notes, that are ideal for those making a first foray into the world of single malt. Disputes that cannot be settled over multiple drams of whisky shall be solely submitted to the court of Amsterdam, The Netherlands unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise.Complex notes of wet grass, sweet clover honey, candied orange peels, and caramel are prevalent on the nose. The palate is highlighted by the flavors of citrus zest, toffee, vanilla beans, and gentle, warming smoke throughout. It all ends with notes of pepper and caramelized sugar. The Glen Moray 12 is a remarkably clean and fresh tasting single malt from Speyside and, for me, an expression that is best to start off an evening with. Fans of Highland whiskies looking for a solid, sweet, unpeated expression should look no further than Glengoyne and specifically their 12-year-old offering. Tamdhu 12 Tamdhu If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect.

Finish: A slight wave of malt. Mostly malt and toasted barley; at the end some sour lemon-grass bits. Medium short finish. The Macallan’s whisky is in demand because it’s hand produced in Speyside’s smallest stills and is of consistently excellent quality. Although this whisky has only spent 12 years maturing (the ‘double cask’ refers to American oak and ex-Sherry) it has still taken on loads of rich, fruity flavours. Juicy citrus, warming oak and ginger spices, sweet vanilla and dried fruits all swirl around in a sweet, oily syrup of a drink – enjoy this one and think of the money you’ve saved on their older expressions. Highland Park is the bold, Viking of the Scotch whisky market. The most northern distillery in the country, it’s located in Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands. Its 12-year-old expression is matured in a combination of sherry-season European as well as American oak casks.Glen Moray doesn’t have the name recognition of some of the other “Glens” in the whisky world. Its 12-year-old expression spends all twelve years of its aging process in used bourbon barrels. The result is a sweet, oaky, rich whisky well-suited for mixing or sipping neat.
