Without spoiling the Dragon premiere for those who haven’t yet seen it—but really, what else could you have been doing last night?—we can confirm that wine appears to be as popular as ever in King’s Landing, and that winter seems not so much to be coming in this earlier tale, so Finland’s Game of Thrones–themed igloo hotel may need to be repurposed as a cooling center for those seeking sanctuary from those hot-headed Targaryens and their flame-breathing dragons (or from, you know, Europe’s real-life summer heat crisis). The shiraz grape contributes a mid-palate fruit sweetness, with plush fruit weight, well balanced with structural oak and supportive tannins. Winemaker Nancy Walker enlisted multiple California wine-growing regions to source fruit for this Cabernet Sauvignon, creating a final blend that’s rich and complex. The wine is aged nine to 12 months in French oak barrels and is finished for three more months in ex-bourbon barrels. That latter step imparts a bolder and more intense character. The wines are released two months ahead of HBO’s premier of House of the Dragon on August 21. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series, which is set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” tells the story of House Targaryen. Facebook HBO’s House of the Dragon is the hotly anticipated prequel to one of the most-watched TV series in history – Game of Thrones. To gear up for this exciting launch of Treasury Wine Estates’ award-winning premium wine brand, Wolf Blass, and Warner Bros. Consumer Products have partnered to launch a limited-edition wine which will be available in August, timed to the launch of House of the Dragon.

Tasting Notes - It is enticing on the nose with lovely aromatics, including tart red cherry and cranberry, followed by subtle earthy and savory notes. The palate is medium bodied with silky textures and delicious bright red fruit that shows just a bit darker in profile than the nose. This gem is garnet in color and lingers with a long, fruit filled finish. I AM a self-confessed Game of Thrones addict and had read all the books way before the series came to our screens. Therefore, I have to admit I was a touch sceptical about the launch of a red wine to coincide with HBO’s House of the Dragon, a prequel following the history of the Targaryen family 100 or so years before Daenerys encountered the White Walkers; but I should not have worried. The grapes were fermented in a combination of small open-top fermenters and stainless steel fermenting tanks, with selected yeasts propagated from cellars in Burgundy. It was pressed during the last days of fermentation and matured in a combination of small French oak barrels and larger stainless steel tanks for eight months. Shiraz contributes a rich, mid-palate fruit sweetness and plush fruitweight, enhanced by well-balanced structural oak and long, supportive Cabernet tannins. According to Delish, the wine is bottled by a division of Vintage Wine Estates cleverly calling itself Seven Kingdoms Cellars in honor of the kingdoms of Westeros.
