Proximity Sensor, Light Sensor, Gyroscope Sensor, Accelerometer (G-Sensor), Magnetometer, Fingerprint Sensor Night time photography tells a similar story. Though it is possible to take usable snaps in low light, if you have steady hands, motion blur creeps in with even the slightest movement. Noise is also prone to creeping in and generally you won’t get the same quality shot as you would using a Pixel 5. Likewise, the screen is bright enough for sunny days, with a measured maximum luminance of 591cd/m² with the automatic brightness setting engaged and a torch aimed at the phone’s ambient light sensor at the top of the screen. Nokia 8.3 5G review: Performance and battery life If you are looking for a 5G equipped phone that doesn't cost the earth, then the Nokia 8.3 5G steps in to the picture. There's something to be understood with the numbers for photos. The regular resolution of the camera sensor is 16 megapixels (4608x3456), which is plenty enough for sharing any pictures on social media. That's a print size of 15.3x11.6in at 300ppi, again a decent size.

The 24 MP front camera tells a similar story. It’s more than good enough for taking selfies in the daylight and video calls, but low light performance isn’t anything to write home about. While in this menu you'll also notice that HDR (High Dynamic Range) is set to 'always on'. It can be changed to auto, though there is no option to turn HDR off. However, the effect is not applied to RAW format images. We much prefer the manual control offered by a Google Pixel 4a through its Live HDR+ sliders.

The Sony Xperia 5 II is a new mid-range smartphone that inherits a lot of the core features from the flagship Xperia 1 II model, in a smaller and more affordable form factor. Read our in-depth Sony Xperia 5 II review, complete with full-size sample images and videos, to find out if this new smartphone can satisfy the serious photographer... Review Roundup If you put this phone alongside a top-end device from the likes of Samsung or Apple you’d likely notice the difference, but we found this to be a nice-looking screen, with vibrant colors and good contrast. The 2-day battery testing was conducted using a real life usage test by HMD Global. The test included active usage of a device for 5 hours per day with a new battery. Usage included e.g. gaming, video streaming, calling, sending sms, browsing and using apps (such as social media, news, navigation and music). The test was conducted with normal device settings in a lit indoor environment. The device was left on standby overnight.

You’re not getting a top-end chipset inside this phone, with HMD Global employing Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 chipset. That allows for 5G connectivity, but you won’t see the same performance levels as in handsets that use the flagship Snapdragon 865 Plus. In Pro photo mode, shutter speed can be manually selected up to a maximum of 20 seconds, while ISO goes up to 6400. If you can support the phone using a tripod, then this manual control over shutter speed might well be the best option for low light shooting. Bottom line? You won’t feel like you’re making any compromises in the power department here, unless you’re always cranking the most demanding games to their limits. Nokia execs’ used to joke that if you dropped one of their phones, it’s the floor that’ll come off worse. The Nokia 8.3 5G follows this strategy when it comes to design. All of this said, it’s difficult to get too excited about the Nokia 8.3 5G. There are other options for your next phone that offer similar features for less money, such as the OnePlus Nord or the Google Pixel 4a. As for the specifics, the Nokia 8.3 5G is priced higher than most of Nokia’s usual offerings, and it has suitably dynamic specifications to match. It uses a beefy Snapdragon 765G chipset for 5G connectivity and processing duties, as well as a choice of either 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage, depending on how much you’re willing to spend. On the flip side, we'd avoid the macro lens altogether. It's extremely difficult to get a good picture with this lens - there are distortions, blur and the resolution is low. It is possible to focus very closely using the standard lens anyway, so that's your best bet for closeup pictures. Charge speeds are reasonably good with the phone generally taking just over an hour to go from 0-100% using the in box charger. You should buy the Nokia 8.3 5G if… You’re after good, clean software The auto mode is capable of taking decent photos for use on social media. Images are generally sharp and the camera app/shutter speeds and auto focus are nice and snappy. Images also don’t feel massively over-processed, which is a common problem on most phones at this price. But colours and dynamic range aren’t on a par with what you’ll get on a Pixel 5 and generally can look a little dull compared to some competitors.

Like its rivals, the Nokia places its power and volume controls on the phone’s right hand side. The positioning is intended to lie where a right handed person’s thumb would naturally fall, but for left handed people it’s an outright pain. This is especially true if you want to use the power buttons inbuilt fingerprint scanner. In the Pro photo mode it is possible to activate a 64MP resolution - this isn't active by default despite the camera being marketed as such. If you ever need extra detail or want to print big, this is the mode to choose. Max brightness levels aren’t as good as you’ll find on some of the best Android phones, but they’re high enough to make sure the phone screen remains legible in everything but the brightest sunlight. Resolution for each lens varies. The primary lens is 16MP, the ultra wide is 12MP, the macro lens is 2MP, while the depth sensor is 2MP too. This is one large phone. The 20:9 aspect ratio FHD+ display measures 6.81in and features a 2400x1080 pixel resolution. That's not the greatest resolution or indeed pixel density - for example there are other phones with smaller displays offering the same resolution. On the battery front, you’ve got a 4,500mAh affair, which should last you a whole day with ease. We pushed our model fairly heavily during testing, which included a few hours of playing Orna – a GPS-based RPG that tends to hit battery life quite harshly – and it still managed to comfortably last till bedtime. By default, the phone is setup to have the volume control key work the camera shutter, though as always there is that shutter option on screen too. Whether holding the phone single-handed or firmly with both, the camera shutter action seems comfortable. Like most phones these days, that rear is smooth and somewhat slippery. However, somehow the 227g phone feels easy enough to operate single-handed, even the camera app. It's awkward, but possible. Lens flare and ghosting is an issue when shooting directly towards the sun. Unless you like the distortion, it's probably best not to point the camera straight towards strong light. As a piece of hardware it doesn’t have all the next generation bells and whistles seen on its competitors. For video, in addition to the standard, ultra-wide and macro lenses, there are 'Action' and 'Dual Sight' settings. Action gives better stabilised footage at the cost of a notable image crop, while Dual Sight splits the screen in two to record with both front and rear cameras simultaneously - we love that feature.
