After reading and enjoying two of Adrienne Adams' witchy Halloween tales - A Woggle of Witches and A Halloween Happening - despite finding the narrative of the second a little weak, I was curious to see what I would make of this, a witchy title illustrated by Adams, but written by someone else. Adrienne Adams, one of my favorite Halloween illustrators, does a wonderful job with the illustrations. She has only been an official witch for three weeks, and she doesn't fit in with the other witches in her circle. Even though things didn't go as planned, Wilma still found a way to be helpful and she couldn't have done it without her mummy friend Mae.

Even though they weren't able to help with the Halloween Bash this year, they can still go together and have fun. Brenda's teacher Miss Snarly, however, overhears this and is surprised to learn that there is a Papa Smurf. When Hefty and Scaredy arrive with the songbird that turned into a frog, after Hefty says his line, he is also animated saying Scaredy's line. With the teacher gone, Smurfette and Hefty break Scaredy out of his cage and also get the spell book page that Papa Smurf needs. Smurfette then spots the songbird that Brenda had changed into a butterfly, which Papa Smurf says is a good opportunity for the young witch to put her new outlook on life to the test. This is a cute book about a witch who wants to win a race to the moon--but there are surprises along the way! Sybilla is the youngest of seven daughters, and her bright red hair isn’t the only thing that is different about her.

Catnip is to publish two titles in 2018 translated from Italian, The Littlest Witch and Lavinia and the Magic Ring, with the latter title being illustrated by Quentin Blake. Miss Snarly, meanwhile, watches as Papa Smurf puts the formula into the acorn's cap so that the frog can lap the formula with its tongue, and instantly it is changed back into a songbird. Papa Smurf sends the Smurfs to gather witch hazel, which is the name of two different characters voiced by June Foray, who in this series happens to voice Jokey. Smurfette defends Brenda by saying Papa Smurf would be the first to teach this young witch how to be good. Once you get past the unusual names, there is absolutely nothing to stop young readers getting lost in this funny novel with larger than life characters - I'm not sure when I last met a villain so disgusting!

But Great Uncle Sempronio has one condition: if Asdrubale doesn't marry a witch within a year and a month of Sempronio's death, the fortune will go to someone else. But who believes in witches in the 21st Century and in any case who would want to marry the ghastly Alfonso?

Brenda promises that she will do her best, but Miss Snarly doesn't want her to do her best, but rather her worst, to learn to be evil or else she won't graduate. When those answers fail to satisfy Brenda's curiosity, Smurfette suggested that Papa Smurf could better explain to her what being good is. The Nebula Award has been awarded to stories in the Science Fiction and Fantasy genre every year since 1966.The story of a three-week old witch (I assume that's a reference to how long she's been a witch, rather than how long she's been alive?

Her efforts to help other witches with various Halloween preparations were similarly unsuccessful, leaving her feeling very down, until she ran into her friend, Mae the mummy. Witchy picture-books are a pet project of mine, so I am grateful to my friend, La Coccinelle, for bringing this one to my attention! However, Brainy still doesn't have anything good to say to Brenda and doesn't want "that horrible witch" to stay in his village before he walks off. Alfonso Terrible is left a large sum of money by a dead relative – but the only way for Alfonso to get his grubby mitts on the cash is to marry a witch. However, it ends up turning the bird into a butterfly, making her realize that it wasn't evil enough.Instead, she gives her student one last chance to prove herself: she gives Brenda the homework assignment of turning a songbird into a bat by sundown. Learning that she does belong there, even though she is different from everyone else, is a great relief to the Littlest Witch. She has won the Anderson award 6 times (85, 89, 88, 92, 95, 2001), has been nominated twice for the Hans Christian Andersen Award and has won several more awards for children s literature in Italy. The story is a bit longer than the average picture book and I really appreciated the reveal at the end. The other Smurfs manage to escape her grasp, but Scaredy ends up falling from the tree and is captured by the teacher.
