Juliette is devastated, and the darkness that’s always dwelled within her threatens to consume her. An explosive encounter with unexpected visitors might be enough to push her over the edge.

One of the standout strengths of the book is its well-developed and complex characters. Juliette, Warner, and Kenji continue to evolve and face challenging situations, making them relatable and compelling. Readers are emotionally invested in their growth and relationships.I reread this to annotate it before Defy Me came out and still loved it. It was difficult to annotate because there's a new POV and new characters who i love a lot, so i definitely had a field day putting hearts in the margins. Also I love juliette ferrars so much. SO MUCH. A lot of readers find this rather annoying, but you get used to it as you go along. It’s much easier for me to deal with than when an entire book is written in a different dialect, like Goddess in the Machine. Who is Tahereh Mafi? This ends the original Shatter Me trilogy, but Mafi wrote three more novels 4 years after the completion of the first trilogy. I shove my way through the quiet, stunned, still-breathing bodies of my friends. I hear Winston’s soft, insistent whimpers and Brendan’s steady, reassuring response that the wound isn’t as bad as it looks, that he’s going to be okay, that he’s been through worse than this and survived it—

So, Ian says quietly. We have to be smart about this. If they’re dead, we need to be thinking about our next moves. Where do we go? She’s just screaming words, I think. They’re just words. But she’s screaming, screaming at the top of her lungs, with an agony that seems almost an exaggeration, and it’s causing devastation I never knew possible. It’s like she just—imploded.

I was an asshole. I took everything out on her. Blamed her for everything. For walking away from what I thought was one of the few sure things in my life. It’s my own fault, really. My own baggage. I’ve still got a lot of shit to work out,” he says finally. “I’ve got issues with people leaving me behind.” Addictive, intense, and oozing with romance. I'm envious. I couldn't put it down." – Lauren Kate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fallen series Kenji's motivations are rooted in friendship and loyalty. He cares deeply for Juliette and her happiness, often mediating conflicts and offering support. Despite me not really having reread the first three books recently, I think both Juliette and Warner felt like the same characters, especially Warner. This was great to see because it would have been too easy (and crappy) to have them both be different people just because they’re in a relationship. Also, the book starts only two weeks after the events of Ignite Me, so it’s not like they could have changed that much in that time anyway.

Warner – Nazeera tells him they have little time. Warner’s leg is injured, he doesn’t think he can make it. Nazeera lifts him up, and they’re in the air. Kenji is a loyal and witty friend to Juliette, providing moments of humor and comic relief throughout the story. He has a charismatic and jovial personality. While the emotional depth is a strength, it can also be overwhelming for readers who prefer a more balanced mix of action and introspection. The book's intense emotional moments may overshadow other aspects of the story. Recommendation Juliette is motivated by a desire to understand her past, reclaim her true identity, and protect those she loves. Her internal struggle with her powers and the ethical use of them plays a pivotal role in her character arc.

I would just know, okay? I cut him off. I would know. And they’re not dead. I take a deep, steadying breath. We’re not going to freak out, I say as calmly as possible. "There has to be a logical explanation. People don’t just disappear, right?" No. I don’t think they’d rush in like that, not with so many soldiers, James says, his blue eyes bright. Not if they had something to hide. i don't have enough characters left in this review to make a list of all the things i loved. there were imperfect parts, and i was wary that i would have to pretend this never happened, but i can only repeat: OH MY GOD
