There will be a few familiar faces and even the evolution of a costume, but ultimately it is a well told and satisfying tale. It was nice seeing Dick break away and become his own person, I think his story is relatable to almost everyone who comes to the point in their lives where they break away from their parents and come into their own. I like how they explored the strained relationship between Bruce and Dick and showed how they separated from each other. His exploration of his roots in the circus and the pull that he can't deny to continue in the path in which Bruce has trained him make him an incredibly compelling hero.

The story starts out very harsh, with Batman and Robin’s relationship full of anger as the two men are struggling with each other. Now that comic books have started to gain more popularity and attention, we are continuing to see our characters leave the four color pages and make the leap to screens both small and big. I enjoy the use of color in the adventures, too — it’s bright overall, but still has that darkness since it is Bat-family book.

Also, this tale is a true 'Bat' family affair, with Batman, Batgirl, Jason Todd as the cocky new Robin, Alfred the butler and Commissioner Gordon all playing important supporting roles in the latter half of the book, when the situation is careening out of control but Nightwing admirably rises to the occasion. Fortunately, it is available for digital download on Kindle and Comixology or streaming on DCUniverseInfinite for reading, and that’s how I’ve been able to reread the book because I borrowed it from my local library and read it years ago.

My new fave thing lately is whenever Bruce decides to disguise himself (Bring back Bruce disguises 2k16. Year One begins with the expanded (and perhaps previously untold, I'm not sure) of Robin screwing up on a routine case and Batman firing him as a result. Luckily, outside of the comics we also had Batman: The Animated Series and when the show moved from Fox to Kids WB, Nightwing was added to the mix. Breaking away from using Batman as much as possible, we see Dick interact with the greater DC universe, and the story told becomes more enriched as a result. As if he had never left the character he helped to give such depth, Dixon gets right back in the swing of mixing the pathos of Dick Grayson in with the somersaults of Robin and provides a timeless yarn about growing up with a super-heroic edge.Emotionally inept Bruce gets scared by Dick's latest brush with death; at least partly, he uses this as an excuse to push Dick away because he doesn't want to be the one who is rejected.

Following a tragedy at a circus that cut the wings off the Flying Graysons, a child was orphaned until Bruce Wayne swept in to offer him a new purpose to his life.

Yeah, there was an old issue of I believe Action Comics Weekly where it established that Dick Grayson had the goods to be a Green Lantern and was (I think) next in line after Hal, Guy Gardner and John Stewart. Nightwing is also a clever and careful person, but he is not afraid to get his hands dirty in an all-out brawl. I love Dick Grayson so it is absolutely no surprise that I would love a book that delves into his personal journey as he figures things out post-Robin. In the final two chapters of Year One, that sub-plot moves to the main stage as a trial run gone awry for Jason becomes the first team-up between two generations of Boy Wonders as they must rescue Alfred from the clutches of Killer Croc.
