This book allows young readers to connect with a character, Rose, whose mom experienced the depression that many moms experience at the loss of an unborn baby. I love that this author’s intent is to provide and easy-to-read, graphic, comic book style novel that can allow teens to feel a commonality when their family is experiencing something similar. The characters were brilliant and vibrant and there was plenty of witty dialogue to enjoy along the way. The connection between Piper and Brendan was well developed and I liked seeing their growth throughout the book and how their relationship prompted both of them to make positive changes in their lives. As expected, the plot did follow a typical romance structure, however something about the setting and direction of the story still felt fresh. Piper was a great FMC, and I don’t say that lightly- what you saw on the surface was not what or who she really was. She was kind, caring, and compassionate. She cared for Brendan sooo deeply and it was honestly just romantic. It was about midway through when I really began to ship Captain Taggart and Piper (HA! Ship – very punny). That hospital room scene though… 🌶️🌶️🌶️ woooooof, I was not ready for that level of spice!! If is unfair to children to unknowingly expose them to this type of language and subject matter when they are innocently looking for a character by which to connect.
