Ruby the Red Fairy - Choose Your Own Magic Rainbow Magic: Ruby the Red Fairy - Choose Your Own Magic

During the summer, when the girls are walking through the forest, they find a dwarf whose beard is stuck in a tree. While sheltering under the ferry’s roof, Rachel spots a dark-haired girl her age looking at the sky and slips back outside to see what the other girl is looking at: a bright and beautiful rainbow. Unlike some other early chapty books which I will read aloud (notably the A to Z mysteries), Rainbow Magic books just aren't any fun for adults. They seem to all go about like this: two friends are doing some typical childish activities like camping, celebrating a holiday, etc when some bad fairy messes things up, so the title good fairy joins up with the girls to save the day. The tale is classified in the international Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index as tale type ATU 426, "The Two Girls, the Bear, and the Dwarf": a pair of sisters welcome a bear into their house; the next summer, the girls rescue an ungrateful dwarf three times; at the end of the tale, the bear defeats the dwarf (who cursed him in the first place) and becomes a human prince. The rainbow leads to a small wooded area, and the girls follow a winding path to a small clearing where they find the end of the rainbow pointing to an upside down black pot. There are also colored Rainbow Magic books for younger readers, which are also published by Scholastic. The books are ghostwritten by a number of authors under the collective pseudonym Daisy Meadows, and illustrated by Georgie Ripper and Alison Winfield in several books and uncredited illustrators in the latest books.

Join the two best friends as they meet Ruby the Red Fairy, the first fairy to introduce them to the world of Rainbow Magic. The characters are entirely indistinguishable, so reading their dialogue aloud just gets muddled, but it's good practice for a beginning reader to follow.

And Kirsty and Rachel are model tweens -- respectful, polite, helpful, and clever (they usually use their brains to outwit the bad guys, rather than brawn) -- who value their friendship and their secret alliance with the fairies. According to the Latvian Folktale Catalogue, a similar story is found in Latvia, indexed as tale type 426, Lācis — princis ("Bear Prince"): two girls shelter a bear and rescue a dwarf; the bear defeats the dwarf and regains human form. He is very interested in fairies and magic, so the subject matter is certainly right up his alley and he reads them easily enough. It was also released in Japan; the film was only recorded in English as its Japanese release has no Japanese vocal track.Admitted by the publishers to be the most popular fairy, she is featured in her own Choose Your Own Magic activity book. It also appears that Ruby must be present in Fairyland for her magic to work, as red (among other colours) disappeared from Fairyland, even though she still had her wand with her when she was banished by Jack Frost.

If you like Rainbow Magic, check out Daisy Meadows’ other series: Magic Animal Friends and Unicorn Magic! The dwarf had previously put a spell on the prince by stealing his precious stones and turning him into a bear. Each story follows best friends Kirsty Tate and Rachel Walker as they help their fairy friends resolve a problem involving bad guy Jack Frost and his goblin minions. King Oberon has a frog footman hand each girl a small silver bag, which the queen says to open only if they need help, and a magical tool will be available. The girls quickly become friends, chatting about mermaids and other magical things as the rain stops, and introduce each other to their parents, at which point they discover their vacation cottages are right next door to each other. The crisis the characters have to solve is so predictable (for a grown-up) that I just wanted to be done, but my kids find it to be actually compelling. Her wand is the source of her power and without it, the colour red would disappear from Fairyland entirely.
