I am also becoming impatient with LGBT+ representation that’s simply there and doesn’t add anything to the story – I don’t think it’s wrong to do this, per se, but I really want to read books that think about LGBT+ themes, not books that just add LGBT+ characters. This short novel sounded very much like something I'd enjoy a great deal, unfortunately, it didn't quite meet my expectations. Picture “Sophie’s World,” “Cloud Atlas” and some arbitrary science fiction novel about artificial intelligence put into a blender, except there are still huge chunks that weren’t blended properly and give you an unpleasant jolt when you accidentally bite into one. Like, I kinda of didn’t care about the plot, but I did enjoy following with the main character’s emotions. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
Ward has a Open University Degree in Literature and Philosophy and a PhD in the use of narrative in philosophy of the mind. This book felt like literary fiction, but it had a science fiction overlay, and that bending of genre was very thought provoking. I think the main reason I enjoyed reading this book is the way it keeps you on your toes all the way through.
What an intriguing review – I am more interested now in this than before, curious to see where I stand with this book.
Also, while I am not familiar with most experimental philosophy and it was interesting to learn about many ideas through this novel, there was one thought experiment drawn from game theory that I was familiar with, The Prisoner’s Dilemma (ch.Then in the second chapter we find ourselves in Cyprus in the head of a seemingly completely unrelated narrator.
