Description

The shape of the Pensieve changed drastically from the film adaptations of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, as in the former it was on some sort of runic tabletop, and in the latter it was in a bowl, as was described in the books. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, when Harry enters to the Headmaster's office, he finds the stone tabletop with the Pensieve and he removes the bowl from it and throws it in the air, where it levitates on its own. Because you and he are connected by the curse that failed," said Dumbledore. "That is no ordinary scar." Although at the time this sounded like a simple indication of Dumbledore's concern, in retrospect one wonders if Dumbledore almost told Harry about the Lost Prophecy at this point.

Horace Slughorn was ashamed that he had given Tom Riddle information about how to make a Horcrux, so he tampered with the memory to cast himself in a better light. That memory appeared to have "congealed" as if it had "gone bad" in the bottle, and there was a strange fog over the scene ( HBP17). With the help of the potion Felix Felicis, Harry was able to prey on Slughorn's guilt and persuade him to hand over the real memory ( HBP22, HBP23). She made fun of Harry’s reaction to the Dementors but later showed considerable concern when Draco was gored by a hippogriff during their first Care of Magical Creatures lesson during their third year ( PA6, PA7). When Harry had acquired the true memory of Horace Slughorn, he went to Dumbledore's office. He then saw the younger Horace Slughorn tell Tom Riddle about how to make a Horcrux and the main purpose of one. Also, he noticed the concern in Slughorn when he saw the greedy expression upon Riddle's face. [8] Due to Dumbledore's death at the end of the school year, that was Harry's last lesson with Dumbledore. The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies...." — Sybill Trelawney's prophecy made to Albus Dumbledore [src] This may have been an instance of the use of Legilimency, but we have little evidence on this point.

The prevailing anti-Muggle attitude at the Ministry of Magic, as commented upon by Dumbledore here, dovetails with Molly's remarks later on how Arthur's liking for Muggles has hampered his career all these years. This is the first appearance of the Pensieve. Professor Snape will store memories in it as a precaution in the next book, starting with the first Occlumency lesson, and continuing until Harry experiences that memory by examining the Pensieve when Snape has left the room. Professor Dumbledore and Harry will use it repeatedly in the sixth book to examine memories that Dumbledore has retrieved, and Harry will use it in the final book to view Snape's autobiography. Voldemort greatly desired to hear the full prophecy, believing it would give him the information to avoid his fate and destroy Harry, but the only people who could retrieve the prophecy record from the Hall of Prophecy in the Ministry of Magic's Department of Mysteries were either Harry or Voldemort himself (as they were the people about whom the prophecy was written). The second memory was of Tom Riddle talking to Albus Dumbledore about the Defence Against the Dark Arts teaching position. In the memory Riddle's physical appearance had drastically changed, due to his impression into the Dark Arts. Riddle had journeyed to Hogwarts with a group of his loyal followers. Dumbledore denied him the DADA position, so he later placed a jinx upon it. This memory was foreshadowing Rowena Ravenclaw's Diadem being made into a Horcrux, as well as its final hiding place. [7] This remark is truly disturbing, if considered in light of the question of whether Snape ever truly abandoned Voldemort's cause at all.
